Job description

Job Purpose

To manage technical aspects of the Entourage Dx laboratory on behalf of the Principal Investigator and technical management team, including providing specialist technical expertise in blood processing, specimen reception, and mass spectrometry sample preparation. The postholder will be responsible for the setup, optimisation, and operation of technical systems and resources to aid the delivery of laboratory and research objectives. In addition, the postholder will undertake a range of technical support activities in line with the School of Molecular Biosciences.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Undertake specialist technical aspects and provide technical expertise in blood processing, sample reception, and mass spectrometry sample preparation as a core member of Entourage Dx. Where required, support the supervision and training of junior staff.

  2. Be responsible for the management of technical aspects of laboratory operations, including oversight of workflows, resources, and technical personnel. Ensure the smooth and efficient delivery of services while driving continuous improvement of lab operations and regulatory compliance.

  3. Independently generate and implement improvements to experimental and operational strategies within the lab environment to enhance research outputs and quality assurance.

  4. Design and optimise experimental procedures, systems, protocols, and equipment setups for effective sample processing and preparation in line with project and regulatory objectives.

  5. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of developments in blood-based diagnostics, mass spectrometry techniques, and laboratory quality systems to ensure technical contribution aligns with the latest standards.

  6. Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical problems across all lab functions, including instrumentation issues, data anomalies, and sample preparation inconsistencies.

  7. Conduct complex data reviews and analyses, identifying trends or anomalies in sample preparation or processing results, and clearly present findings to the team or contribute to research outputs.

  8. Where relevant, manage the lab’s technical budget, advising on and authorising purchasing of key consumables and capital equipment to support operations within budget constraints.

  9. Be responsible for ensuring compliance with all relevant Health and Safety, GCP, ISO, and FDA requirements. Maintain necessary documentation including SOPs, RAs, COSHH, and temperature logs. Advise and train others on regulatory changes and raise safety concerns to the PI or appropriate authority as needed.

Knowledge/Qualifications

A1. Either: Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar role OR Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 8 [Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4, Higher National Diploma] or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role.

A2. Up-to-date knowledge of legislative and regulatory frameworks including GCP, ISO, FDA and Health and Safety requirements.

 

Skills

C1. Demonstrable specialist technical skills in blood processing, specimen reception, and mass spectrometry sample preparation, with significant depth and recognised expertise in these areas.

C2. Proficient IT user with experience in laboratory information systems and specialist data handling tools.

C3. Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills, with excellent accuracy and attention to detail in managing experimental data and equipment.

C4. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interpret the technical requirements of a diverse research group and train others effectively.

C5. Excellent teamworking skills, and experience in supervising or managing technical staff.

C6. Ability to plan and manage a wide range of technical tasks, prioritising to meet competing deadlines.

 

Experience

E1. Significant relevant work experience in a regulated research laboratory, with evidence of professional development and contribution to technical innovation.

E2. Proven ability to understand and meet the complex technical needs of stakeholders within a fast-paced lab environment.

E3. Experience of managing budgets, including monitoring expenditure and authorising purchasing decisions.

E4. Demonstrated ability to work independently while supporting the broader research goals of the team or institution.

 

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 6, £33,482 - £37,174 per annum.

 

This post is full time and fixed term for up to 31/07/27 Hard End Date
