Job description

Job Purpose

 

Work with the Team leader of the Widening Participation (WP) Summer Programmes and Community Engagement Team to coordinate the University WP Senior Phase Tutoring Programme (SPTP). Develop and expand the programme to c. 500 S4-S6 secondary school pupils across c. 15 secondary schools in the West of Scotland.

 

Act as a key point of contact between the University of Glasgow and relevant staff in schools, Local Authorities and partner institutions. Work with internal and external partners to achieve positive outcomes for pupils in supporting studies at National 5 Mathematics and Higher level in Mathematics, English, Biology, Physics and Chemistry.

 

Work with the Team leader of the Summer Programmes and Community Engagement Team and Head of WP to review, improve and develop the programme at the end of the academic year.

 

The postholder will have daily to weekly contact with young people from partner schools and will, therefore, require a Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) check.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

 

1. Working with the Team leader of the Summer Programmes and Community Engagement Team, liaise with WP, External Relations (ER) and wider University academic and support service staff to plan and implement the development of the programme held online and on the University of Glasgow campus. Oversee the running of activities on campus and delivery of online tutoring sessions on Microsoft Teams. Meet with subject tutors and school teacher contacts to support pupil participation, attend school information events and contribute to evaluation and reports during and at the end of the programme.

2. Work with the Team Leader of the Summer Programmes and Community Engagement Team and other University Services staff on the recruitment, selection and training of the SPTP tutors. Undertake delegated supervision of SPTP tutors

3. Liaise with external contacts and agencies, e.g., Local Authorities (LAs) and secondary schools, to promote and engage with the tutoring programmes, ensuring their relevance and benefit to stakeholders and participants.

4. Work with the Team leader of the Summer Programmes and Community Engagement Team, Data and Evaluation team and school and LA contacts to ensure the collation, recording and maintenance of participating pupil data.

5. Work closely with Team leader of the Summer Programmes and Community Engagement Team, WP colleagues and school contacts to develop available materials to support the delivery of the programme.

6. Plan, coordinate and implement campus visits for participants at the beginning of the programme to provide an effective introduction to the programme, tutors and university. Liaise with colleagues across the University and externally to ensure coordination of logistics and health and safety.

7. Working closely with the Team Leader of the Summer Programmes and Community Engagement Team and relevant ER colleagues, monitor and manage programme expenditure within the annual budget,

8. Jointly with Team leader of the Summer Programmes and Community Engagement Team, the WP Data and Evaluation Team and partner university contacts, prepare annual reports for external funders and relevant University committees and to conduct and disseminate evaluation and research associated with the programme.

9. Liaise with WP Schools Programme Team colleagues to offer support and advice to students entering the University and communicate relevant Schools and Summer Programmes available and relevant to participating pupils.

10. Responsible for own complex and changing workload.  Directly support delivery of tutoring sessions, delivering campus tours for young people visiting the University and joining sessions online where required.

11. Conduct other duties as required to support the Head of WP, Summer Programmes and Community Engagement Team and broader WP team.

 

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

 

Knowledge/Qualifications  

 

Essential:

A1 Either: Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills through personal development and progression in a similar related role(s). Or: Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 8 (Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4, Higher National Diploma) or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role.

A2 Sound understanding of the learning skills required for study in Higher Education (HE).

A3 Knowledge of the Scottish secondary school system.

A4 Knowledge of HE admissions procedures and the UCAS application process.

A5 Will have undergone an Enhanced Disclosure Scotland check.

 

Desirable:

B1 Knowledge of University of Glasgow WP provision.

B2 Understanding of University policy and procedure relating to the recruitment and employment of staff.

B3 Understanding of government regulations relating to working with young adults.

B4 Understanding of University policy on Equality and Diversity procedures and policies.

E4 Experience of developing and conducting training sessions.

E5 Experience of working with learners online.

E6 Experience of evaluating provision to produce service improvement.

E7 Relevant administrative experience.

F1 Project Coordination.

 

Terms and Conditions

 

Salary will be Grade 6, £33,951 - £37,694 per annum pro rata.

 

This post is part-time (24.5 hours per week), and has funding available until 30 August 2026 in the first instance.
