Job description

The University of Glasgow’s School of Biodiversity, One Health & Veterinary Medicine is seeking to appoint a Senior Lecturer/Lecturer in Veterinary Public Health. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the continuing refinement and delivery of Veterinary Public Health (VPH) teaching in the taught programmes of the School of Biodiversity, One Heath and Veterinary Medicine.The School has an international reputation in teaching, clinical services and research and is accredited by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), the European Association of Establishments of Veterinary Education (EAEVE) and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). You will carry out associated tasks as requested by the Head of Division and Head of School to maintain and further the School/College objectives and reputation.

 

Job Purpose

The postholder will contribute to the delivery of an excellent student experience for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including continuing professional development. The postholder will undertake scholarship to enhance learning and teaching in the School and actively engage in relationships with external stakeholders and so advance knowledge exchange, public understanding and outreach. This is a Post-doctoral role in Veterinary Public Health at the School of Biodiversity, One Health & Veterinary Medicine.

 

For appointment at Grade 9: The postholder will provide academic leadership for Veterinary Public Health and Food Safety aspects of the BVMS and other degrees, including development of a sustainable research strategy and line-management of other academic staff.

 

Main Duties & Responsibilities

 

Undergraduate & Postgraduate Teaching and Training:

1. To lead (Grade 9), plan, prepare and deliver VPH teaching sessions, including delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching/learning and assessment, as well as contributing to the delivery of VPH continuing professional development activities, when relevant, to the ultimate achievement of the School’s teaching objectives.

2. To support the development of creative and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, in accordance with the University’s Quality Enhancement Strategy, so that the educational opportunities available to students are maintained and improved.

3. To provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support their learning.

4. To supervise undergraduate student practical work, advising on skills, methods and techniques to assist the transfer of knowledge.

5. To collaborate with colleagues to develop undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

6. To contribute to the ongoing development and design of the undergraduate curriculum.

7. To assist students with difficulties e.g. learning support/ problems.

8. To maintain and develop knowledge in VPH and related aspects of production animal health, attending and actively contributing to national/international events/major research seminars/conferences within VPH by invitation or otherwise.

9. To keep abreast of advancements in relevant technology and their applications and continually update both knowledge and skills in VPH in support of teaching and clinical excellence.

10. Active involvement/participation in practical/professional and/or clinical practice bodies related to VPH at national and international level as appropriate.

 

Administration:

11.To undertake divisional administrative duties as requested by the Head of School, Head of Division or their delegate.

12.To participate in the performance and development review processes, as appropriate, in accordance with University strategy.

 

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

 

Knowledge/Qualifications

 

Essential:

A1 Veterinary degree registerable with the RCVS.

A2 A comprehensive and up to date knowledge across the VPH field.

 

For Appointment at Grade 8:

A3 Advanced training in research (PhD or equivalent) and evidence of other VPH relevant specialist status (e.g. European or American College diplomate).

 

For Appointment at Grade 9:

A4 Extensive knowledge and experience of degree course organisation (e.g. module leadership, design of lectures practicals, logistics, examinations and exam question setting and marking) and delivery of VPH teaching to veterinary undergraduate students.

A5 Membership of an appropriate professional or teaching body (e.g. Higher Education Academy).

 

Desirable:

B1 Willingness to undertake training, or working towards membership, of an appropriate professional or teaching body (e.g. Higher Education Academy).

B2 Official Veterinarian (OV) qualification.

 

Skills

 

Essential:

C1 Expertise in relevant areas of VPH.

C2 Excellent interpersonal, organisational, presentation and communication (written and oral) skills with the ability to deal with issues using tact, diplomacy and discretion.

C3 Ability to use initiative and to exercise independent judgement.

C4 Ability to work independently and as part of a team to tight deadlines.

C5 Ability to work proactively, multi-task and show a high degree of responsibility.

C6 Ability to accept collegiate responsibilities and act accordingly.

 

For Appointment at Grade 9:

C7 The ability to provide expert advice to clinicians, external veterinary surgeons and professional organisations.

C8  Possess proven time, project and people management skills.

 

Experience

 

Essential

E1 Experience of planning and progressing work activities within professional guidelines or organisational policy, applying initiative and independent judgement.

E2 Demonstrated commitment to open research, as appropriate to the discipline, through open data, open code, open educational resources and practices that support replication.

E3 Proven commitment to supporting the career development of colleagues and to other forms of collegiality appropriate to the career stage.

 

For appointment at Grade 8:

E4 Experience and achievement in the relevant field reflected in an expanding personal academic portfolio.

E5 Experience of developing and demonstrating teaching and research methods and devising models, approaches, techniques, critiques and methods.

 

For Appointment at Grade 9:

E6 Substantial track record of scholarship and development and delivery of teaching, and proven track record to develop and devise teaching programmes, techniques and methods.

E7 Sustained engagement with current practice and developing knowledge.

E8 Proven track record in publishing articles in peer-reviewed international scientific articles.

 

Desirable:

F1. Working experience on relevant epidemiological and microbiology techniques.

F2. Should have held a full and valid UK driving licence for 2 years.
