Job description

Applications are invited from candidates of international standing with an appropriate record of academic achievement in applied animal nutrition, metabolomics and/or the microbiome. We are looking for a candidate who will complement our existing strengths in clinical veterinary medicine, evolutionary biology, animal physiology, aquaculture and microbiology and whose work contributes to our broader research agenda around animal welfare, sustainability and planetary health. We are particularly interested in receiving applications from candidates offering experience with companion animal and non-ruminant systems, complementing existing expertise within the School.

 

Job Purpose

To make a substantial and positive contribution to the strategic direction of the School/College through leading and contributing to research of international standard, high quality teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, securing research funding, and providing academic leadership and management within the School/College. To actively engage in relationships with external stakeholders that advance knowledge exchange, public understanding and outreach.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Pursue and deliver independent research proposals and/or collaborative research projects, project managing research activities, supervising and taking responsibility for the research team. Securing external resources to support research individually and/or jointly, as appropriate to the subject area.

2. Develop an expert reputation in the field by effective dissemination and publishing of research findings in leading journals and conferences, and where appropriate undertaking knowledge exchange activities.

3. Make a substantial contribution to developing and enhancing the research profile of the School/College. Establishing and leading research collaborations with appropriate individuals and groups within the University, including multi-disciplinary links, and developing external research collaborations both nationally and internationally, to ensure that research activities are at the forefront of the field.

4. Actively contribute to the effective management and administration of the College/School, assuming responsibility for the management of allocated resources and contributing to the wider organisation of the subject area.

5. Carry out programme/course administration within required timescales ensuring effective communication of information, in particular assessment requirements and criteria and timely and constructive feedback on assessment.

6. Develop effective approaches which enhance intellectual understanding and innovation in the field and support and enhance course delivery, course organisation, feedback and assessment. This may involve blended and/or online provision.

7. Ensure an inclusive and evidence-based approach to facilitating learning in a range of face to face and online delivery formats such as tutorials, lectures, problem-based learning, that promotes student participation and learning outcome attainment.

8. Develop effective working relationships with students and staff in the subject specialism and wider school/university, providing specialist advice, support and academic leadership. Work in partnership with relevant student services teams, respond appropriately to the diverse range of learning approaches and learner needs.

9. To supervise project work at undergraduate and Masters levels and take forward the supervision and training of postgraduate research students.

10. Take on administrative or management roles within the subject/School as assigned by the Head of School. Specifically, the post holder will be expected to take on coordination of the Masters in Animal Nutrition programme, in addition to contributions to other programmes offered by SBOHVM.

11. Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.

12. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.

Qualifications

 

Essential:

A1 PhD or equivalent in animal nutrition or related disciplines or a professional veterinary qualification.

 

For appointment at Grade 9:

A2 An extensive and established reputation in research and significant teaching experience within the discipline/subject area.

A3 Recognised expertise in subject discipline/specialism to develop new knowledge and understanding within the field.

A4 A thorough understanding of, and track record in, contributing to broader academic leadership and management at School/Service/College level.

A5 Sustained engagement with current practice and developing knowledge.

 

Desirable:

B1 Membership of relevant professional body, where appropriate.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

 

Essential:

C1 Extensive breadth and depth of knowledge in animal nutrition and related disciplines to develop research and teaching programmes/methodologies/learning support.

C2 Established reputation in research and teaching, including an international research profile in animal nutrition and related disciplines.

C3 Proven ability to design, review and enhance multiple learning, teaching and assessment programmes.

C4 Ability to communicate complex or conceptual ideas to those with limited knowledge and understanding and developing early career academic colleagues.

C5 Ability to contribute to broader leadership and management activities along with an awareness of current and future priorities of the University/College/School/Service.

C6 Established track record of research outputs and of applying for, and securing, external research funding compatible with enhancing the School’s research profile in accordance with School objectives.

C7 Experience and achievement in the relevant field reflected in an expanding personal academic portfolio.

C8 Experience of developing and demonstrating teaching and research methods and devising models, approaches, techniques, critiques and methods.

C9 Track record of continuous engagement with current practice and developing knowledge.

C10 Demonstrated commitment to open research, as appropriate to the discipline, through open data, open code, open educational resources and practices that support replication.

C11 Proven commitment to supporting the career development of colleagues and to other forms of collegiality appropriate to the career stage.

 

For appointment at Grade 9:

C12 Proven ability to plan and lead staff and efficiently deploy resources in support of major research and teaching activities.

C13 Ability to undertake academic leadership of groups/activities with substantial impact on finance and other resources.

C14 Ability to forge new and effective relationships with colleagues, internally and externally, to foster collaboration across the University and with colleagues in other institutions.

C15 Ability to demonstrate independent thought in order to generate original research and secure research income.

C16 Substantial track record of published research of international standard compatible with enhancing the School’s submission to the REF.

C17 Established track record of successfully securing funding for research projects, as appropriate for the subject specialism.

C18 Internationally recognised excellence and reputation in subject area and scholarship of teaching in the discipline.

C19 Proven track record of developing and devising teaching programmes, techniques and methods.

 

Desirable:

D1 Data analysis skills at an advanced level.

D2 Understanding and experience of databases and other IT applications/packages.

D3 Knowledge of/willingness to, teach and supervise aspects of animal nutrition in companion and exotic animals.

 

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 8/9, £49,559 - £57,422/£59,139 - £66,537 per annum.
