Job description

Job Purpose

Working with the Schools’ Programme Team Leader to coordinate the University WP Schools’ Programmes and ensure their effective and efficient delivery to c. 5,000 S4-S6 secondary school pupils in 160 secondary schools in the West of Scotland.

 

Work with internal and external partners to achieve positive outcomes for pupils and ensure the programmes are viable, effective and attractive pathways for learners into undergraduate degree-level study at the University.

 

Work with the Schools’ Programmes Team Leader and Head of WP to review, improve and develop the programmes on an annual basis and to secure ongoing programme funding.

 

Main Duties

1. Working with the Schools’ Programmes Team Leader, liaise with WP, External Relations and wider University academic and support colleagues to plan, develop and implement the suite of schools’ programmes (including Top-Up, Reach and Access to a Career Programmes) in schools, online and on the University campus, targeting secondary schools in the West of Scotland to promote the programmes. Jointly oversee the day to day running and evaluation of activities including arranging tutor visits; meeting with school contacts to address individual issues; attend school information events and contributing to reports.

2. Work jointly with the Schools’ Programmes Team Leader and WP, colleagues, on the recruitment, selection, training and day to day supervision of c. 90 part-time variable hours WP Tutors. Oversee recruitment and training of c. 50 undergraduate mentors in all areas pertaining to the delivery of the schools’ programmes.

3. Delegated supervision of WP Tutors as required to fulfil the aims and objectives of the Schools’ Programme Team and WP, team.

4. Working with the Schools’ Programmes Team Leader and relevant WP, colleagues to ensure the collation, recording and maintenance of participating pupil data in a fit for purpose database.

5. Working with Schools’ Programmes Team Leader, WP&, and ER colleagues, jointly develop programme materials, messages, resources and activities to maintain currency of programme curricula.

6. Working with the Schools’ Programmes Team Leader and fellow ER colleagues, monitor and manage programme expenditure within the annual budget.

7. Jointly conduct the planning, coordination and implementation of campus sessions for secondary schools to the University of Glasgow. Liaise with colleagues across the University and externally to ensure coordination of logistical and health and safety issues.

8. Working with the Schools’ Programmes Team Leader, jointly oversee cross marking of schools’ programme written assignments by WP Tutors and collation of final pupil profiles and certificates to ensure quality assurance. Lead on distribution of participating pupil grades to HEIs across Scotland.

9. Jointly with the Schools’ Programmes Team Leader monitor performance indicators; conduct regular evaluation of activity provision and stakeholder satisfaction; compile annual reports for external funders and presentation to Steering Groups. Ensure data findings feed into medium and long-term action plans.

10. Working with the Head of WP, Schools Programmes Team Leader and colleagues, implement the University’s commitment to asylum seeker, refugee and forced migrant applicants and students and to being a University of Sanctuary. Contribute to development of University policy and provision in this area and support, advise and encourage individuals from these backgrounds considering Higher Education, at both the pre- and post-entry stages.

11. Offer support and advice to students entering the University and coordinate appropriate training for staff in relation to the University’s Sanctuary responsibilities. Jointly oversee maintenance and development of the content relating to Sanctuary status and provision on the University’s website and develop and disseminate appropriate information and resources to potential students from these backgrounds, and to professionals, teachers, relevant local authority contacts, and those within relevant third sector organisations who work and engage with individuals from these backgrounds.

12. Represent the Schools’ Programmes Team Leader on relevant forums and committees as required and appropriate. Conduct other duties as required to support WP, and ER colleagues and wider University staff.

 

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential: A1 Either: Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills through personal development and progression in a similar related role(s). Or: Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 8 (Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4, Higher National Diploma) or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role.

A2 Good understanding of the learning skills required for study in Further (FE) and Higher Education (HE).

A3 Detailed knowledge of access routes and pathways within Scotland, and experience of supporting students within this context.

A4 Some understanding of current debates, trends and issues relating to asylum seekers, refugee and forced migrant issues.

 

Desirable:

B1 Knowledge of the Scottish secondary school system.

B2 Understanding of University policy and procedure relating to the recruitment and employment of staff.

B3 Understanding of government regulations relating to working with young adults.

B4 Understanding of University policy on Equality and Diversity procedures and policies.

B5 Valid, clean driving license preferable.

B6 Will have undergone an Enhanced Disclosure Scotland check.

E1 Relevant administrative experience of working in the HE, Widening Participation and Lifelong Learning sectors.

E2 Experience of working with learners.

E3 Experience of developing and conducting training sessions.

E4 Experience of working with learners online.

E5 Experience of developing learning resources.

E6 Experience of evaluating provision to produce service improvement.

 

Desirable:

F1 Experience of working with learners in schools and HE.

 

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 6, £33,951 - £37,694 per annum.

 

This post is full time and fixed term for up to 12 months or until the substantive postholder returns.
