Job description
We are seeking a Resource Developer for the recently launched Turner-Kirk Centre for Spatial Reasoning at the University of Glasgow. A key function of the Centre is to deliver STEM SPACE, a programme introducing spatial reasoning development to Scottish primary schools via mathematics lessons, to accelerate maths skills development and prepare pupils for success in STEM subjects when they reach secondary school. This programme aims to roll out spatial reasoning development to 800 schools, or 40% of all Scottish primary schools, across all 32 local authorities in Scotland; we expect this level of adoption, with demonstrated success, will lead to a tipping point where all schools adopt the approach.
There are four key aspects to the Centre’s activities: setting up the Centre and day-to-day operations; enrolling and supporting the 32 local authorities to roll out the spatial reasoning approach to their schools; collecting and analysing evidence about the adoption and success of the approach; and enhancing the teaching materials to ensure universal access for learners of all backgrounds. A Project Officer post will take a lead on the first three aspects; this Resource Developer post will take a lead on the last aspect, while supporting the first three where necessary.
Job Purpose
To analyse and identify universal access issues with the STEM SPACE lesson plans and digital materials, through consultation with designers and practising teachers. To independently develop and trial enhanced versions of the existing plans and materials that will be usable in any classroom and with pupils of any background. To investigate new Centre activities, and provide support where necessary for Centre operations and STEM SPACE roll-out to local authorities.
Main duties and responsibilities:
1. Determine both general and specific challenges in universal delivery of the STEM SPACE materials, relating to the wide range of Scottish classroom environments and the breadth of pupil backgrounds, via both desk-based analysis of materials and the perspectives of Scottish teachers already using the programme in their classrooms.
2. Design alternative versions of the lesson plans and classroom materials and activities to suit the range of classroom environments and pupil backgrounds, using an iterative design process with regular input from practising teachers, Education Scotland, our Australian partners and other key stakeholders.
3. Develop paper-based/off-line versions of the digital spatial reasoning consolidation materials available to the STEM SPACE programme, liaising with the original designers in Australia.
4. Trial all new and adjusted materials in both lab and then classroom settings with full evaluations.
5. Pilot alterations similar to the STEM SPACE approach – of enhancing required maths curriculum areas with spatial reasoning activities – in wider STEM learning, through liaison with relevant stakeholders.
6. Investigate alternative contexts for spatial reasoning development that could be adopted by the Centre in future work, for example, in adult education settings or back-to-work schemes.
7. Contributing to STEM SPACE project roll-out activities as necessary.
8. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the team.
9. Engage in reasonable professional development activities as appropriate.

A1 Either: Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar or number of different roles. Or: Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9, (Ordinary Degree, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4), or equivalent (including professional accreditation with relevant formal training), and experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s).
A2 Knowledge and experience of primary school education system and contexts.

E1 Experience of trialling educational materials for use by others.

Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 7, £41,064 - £46,049 per annum.
This post has funding for up to 32 months and is full time (35 hours per week), however applicants wanting to work part-time will also be considered.
