Job Purpose
To deliver all operational elements of a market leading Print proposition for the University of Glasgow. The role holder is responsible for advancing and improving the service via innovation and development.
Responsible for the day to day running of the Print Unit including the supervision of all staff. Overseeing the preparation and execution of all Print related jobs.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
To ensure the efficient running of the Print Unit, solving all software, hardware, staffing and production issues, to ensure adherence to productions schedules, while leading on the development of new services and continuous service improvements.
Responsible for managing and monitoring departmental budgets, ensuring cost efficiency, accurate forecasting, and adherence to financial guidelines.
Supervise and develop unit staff ensuring work is carried out accurately and efficiently to meet customers standards and deadlines. Offer guidance and technical assistance in all aspects of production to staff.
Planning the Units workload and apportioning of work to Unit team within appropriate timescales based on agreed production requirements. Monitoring progress of work to ensure that timescales are adhered to.
Developing and maintaining a system of work which promotes work being carried out accurately, safely, and efficiently with minimum downtime.
Hands-on role as a working Supervisor doing the same work as other staff and covering work as required over staff holidays / absence. This requires an in-depth knowledge of all systems within the section to be able to move seamlessly to cover any role.
Liaise with colleagues to be fully aware of the production needs and to direct the flow of work accordingly. Liaise with the administrator to discuss pricing for customers, production method and the supply production times.
Demonstrate a thorough understanding of all software and hardware for troubleshooting and operational problems while supporting other members of staff in its correct use. This will include but not limited to Adobe and Microsoft products. Manage and maintain back up strategies as required.
Liaise with customers from university and external communities and provide information about work in progress and guidance for preparing files which will progress to print. Visit customers or invite them to the unit to discuss and advise on file preparation.
Actively seek out new and emerging markets for potential business opportunities and work with the Commercial Development Manager to develop and implement solutions.
Responsible for updating and maintaining the web to print website, incorporating student, staff and commercial platforms, ensuring key products and services are fully accessible, up to date, and functioning.
Responsible for the regular reviewing, acting upon and responding to feedback from Customer Experience portals.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential
A1 Either: ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar role. Or: Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 8 (Higher / Scottish Vocational Qualification Level 3, Higher National Diploma) or equivalent and experience of personal development in a similar role, e.g. graphic design.
A2 Detailed IT knowledge, with expertise, in Adobe Creative Suite, in particular InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat.
A3 Detailed knowledge of Microsoft Office packages, particularly Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
A4 Demonstrate knowledge of relevant equipment, including safe operation, routine maintenance and troubleshooting procedures.
Desirable:
B1 Graphic Design Qualification.
B2 Knowledge of Photography such as image resolution and colour formatting.
B3 Knowledge of website editing such as HTML.
Skills
Essential:
C1 Strong supervisory skills with ability to motivate staff, empower others and manage performance.
C2 Advanced ability to operate Windows and Mac based operating systems.
C3 Advanced ability to use Adobe Creative Suite products, specifically InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop.

C5 Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build and maintain professional and effective working relationships with colleagues and external stakeholders.

C11 Capability to manage a budget line, including planning and tracking the profit and loss accounts.

Experience Essential:
E1 Experience of supervising and motivating a team, fostering engagement and achieving set objectives.
E2 Previous demonstratable experience working within a print production environment.
E3 Demonstrable experience of working with large format print.
E2 Proven experience of positively engaging with internal/external customer groups.
E3 Demonstrable experience of previous project work using Adobe Creative Suite to produce design & photography on both a Mac and Windows based operating systems.
E5 Experience of handling customer enquiries, customer feedback and working within a high intensity, fast paced environment
E6 Experience of planning and estimating of work.
E7 Experience of managing payments.
Desirable:
F1 Previous experience of working in a busy customer facing environment.
F2 Experience of designing for websites and social media.
F3 Experience of delivering innovative solutions within a customer-based field.
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 6, £33,482 - £37,174 per annum.
This post is full time (35 hours p/w) and fixed term for up to 12 months.
