Job description
Job Purpose
To lead and deliver high-quality Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) and qualitative research activities within the Digital Health Validation Lab. The post holder will ensure the public are meaningfully involved throughout the Lab’s research and innovation processes, from project conception to dissemination, and will deliver qualitative research activities, including data analysis and management, in support of healthtech product development projects. The role also includes navigating governance requirements and working closely with researchers, innovators, patients, carers, communities and the wider public to ensure DHVL activities are inclusive, transparent, and impactful. The postholder will also work with the new PPI strategy and PPI colleagues across the College.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Lead and coordinate PPIE activity across the research lifecycle within the Digital Health Validation Lab, ensuring effective integration of patient and public perspectives from project conception through to dissemination.
Support researchers and innovators to develop and embed PPIE strategies in grant applications and project proposals, ensuring alignment with best practice and funder requirements across disciplines.
Work with researchers and innovators to deliver PPIE throughout the research lifecycle, embedding patient and public input into study design, evaluation processes, and dissemination of findings.
Project manage PPIE activity within the Lab, maintaining oversight of timelines, resources, and outputs, and producing regular dashboard reports for internal and external stakeholders.
2. Deliver and facilitate high-quality PPIE and qualitative research activities that are inclusive, accessible, and impactful.
Plan, organise, and facilitate advisory group meetings, workshops, focus groups, and other engagement activities.
Recruit, support, and maintain relationships with patient and public contributors, ensuring their contributions are valued and acted upon.
Advise researchers and companies on developing clear, accessible communication materials (written, digital, and visual), and ensure these are appropriate before being shared with patient and public groups.
Support reimbursement of public contributors in line with NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) guidance, ensuring contributions are recognised.
Lead qualitative research activities, including developing interview guides, conducting interviews or focus groups, data analysis and reporting findings in line with ethical and methodological standards.
3. Capture, evaluate, and report on the impact of PPIE activity, contributing to the Lab’s commitment to accountability and continuous improvement.
Develop and apply appropriate frameworks and feedback mechanisms to monitor outcomes.
Produce reports, case studies, and presentations to share good practice and learning internally and externally.
4. Champion equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in all PPIE activities, ensuring that under-represented voices are actively sought and meaningfully included.
Proactively engage underserved groups and communities less likely to be represented in digital health research.
Work with colleagues to embed inclusive approaches across the Lab’s research and innovation portfolio.
5. Undertake any other reasonable duties as requested by the line manager and commensurate with the grade of the post.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential:
A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9 (Ordinary Degree, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4), or equivalent (including professional accreditation with relevant formal training) and experience of personal development in a similar or related role
A2 Knowledge of PPIE concepts, standards and initiatives relevant to the UK
A3 Knowledge of the regulatory framework governing research involving humans
A4 Understanding of UK, EU and International data protection legislation
Desirable:
B1 Knowledge of research legislation including the Medicines for Human Use (Clinical Trials) Regulations, ICH Good Clinical Practice, Mental Capacity Act
B2 Knowledge of healthcare innovation product development cycles
B3 Familiarity with approaches to qualitative data collection and study design
B4 Awareness of common methods of analysing qualitative data, such as thematic analysis, content analysis, and framework analysis

Experience
Essential:
E1 Successfully delivering inclusive PPIE activities.
E2 Experience delivering presentations on PPIE activities and/or best practice
E3 Developing, implementing, delivering strategy and reporting on a strategy to meet set objectives.
E4 Leading involvement activities with focus on expertise sharing and capacity building.
E5 Engaging and working with research teams and ensuring delivery of projects to achieve key targets.
E6 Providing high calibre professional services within a complex multi- stakeholder profile context.
Desirable:
F1 Experience of Higher Education environment and supporting the work of academics.
F2 Experience of working in a healthcare or clinical research setting
F3 Experience representing an organisation within communities and public forums
F4 Practical experience of facilitating and managing focus groups and workshops
F5 Experience analysing qualitative data using a range of methods
F6 Experience using qualitative data analysis software such as NVivo or ATLAS.ti

This post is part time (17.5 hours per week) and open ended with funding available up until 30th September 2028.
