Job description

Job Purpose

To supervise veterinary undergraduate students (BVMS 5) participating in all aspects of first opinion small animal clinical services, primarily at partner sites off campus, with an emphasis on supervising student clinical activities. Support the teaching and assessment of clinical, professional and communication skills and associated administration.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Teaching:

1. To take responsibility for aspects of the planning, organisation and delivery of undergraduate clinical supervision activities in small animal first opinion practice, as directed by the Head of School in consultation with the course leaders. 2. To participate in the supervision of practical work advising on skills, methods and techniques in both the small animal clinical environment and the teaching laboratories.

3. To take responsibility for the delivery of a range of assessment activities and engage with in the examination process as appropriate and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support learning.

4. To contribute to the ongoing development and design of the curriculum, in a manner that supports a research led and scholarly approach to student learning.

5. To develop and lead specific initiatives to enhance the learning experience and ensure the requirements of regulatory bodies are met.

6. To participate in quality assurance and enhancement activities, curriculum review and programme re-accreditation with the University and professional bodies to ensure high quality education provision is maintained.

7. To participate in student mentoring, portfolio guidance and/or clinical coaching

 

Clinical:

8. To provide high-quality care to in and out patients at small animal first opinion sites through clinical case work and supervision of Professional phase veterinary undergraduate students.

 

Administration/Other

9. To undertake administrative duties as requested by the professional phase course leader,  Head of School or delegate.

10. To engage in scholarship to keep up-to-date with developments in their discipline and in the practice of teaching, in order to provide a high quality research-informed teaching contribution and contribute to/generate appropriate academic outputs.

11. To contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the  University’s Strategic Plan, World Changers Together.

 

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

 

Knowledge/Qualifications

 

Essential:

A1 Veterinary degree registered with the RCVS.

 

Desirable: 

B1 Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

B2 Evidence of post graduate professional development.

B3 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or equivalent in a related discipline and/or teaching experience.

 

Skills

 

Essential:

C1 Up to date Expertise in small animal first opinion practice reflected in training and qualifications.

C2 The ability to provide clinical advice to students, clinicians, support staff and external organisations working in small animal first opinion practice.

C3 Experience in the delivery of teaching and practical training at undergraduate veterinary student level. C4 Excellent communications skills both orally and written.

C5 Excellent interpersonal skills and presentation skills.

C6 Time, project and people management skills.

C7 Ability to work with little supervision.

C8 Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

C9 Self-motivated, able to plan for contingencies and think strategically.

C10 Ability to accept collegiate responsibilities and act accordingly.

 

Desirable:

D1 Performance of scholarship in a veterinary practice or academic environment.

D2 Understanding and experience of databases and other IT applications/packages.

 

Experience

 

Essential:

E1 Substantial relevant experience of clinical small animal practice.

 

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 7, £41,064 - £46,049 per annum pro rata.

 

This post is part-time (21 hours per week), and open ended.
