Job description

We are pleased to offer an exciting opportunity for a Clinical University Lecturer/Clinical Senior University Lecturer/Honorary Specialty Dentist in Dental Public Health to join the Glasgow Dental School, part of the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing, within the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences (MVLS) at the University of Glasgow.

Job Purpose

To make a substantial and positive contribution towards the strategic direction of the Dental School by providing academic leadership and support in Dental Public Health with a particular focus on applying behavioural sciences in clinical and community settings. The role involves significant responsibility for the design and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in Dental Public Health and Behavioural Sciences as applied in the clinical and community settings, including such areas as communication skills, preventive interventions, and oral health improvement programmes and activities. The post­holder will be expected to participate fully in the teaching management of the Section of Community Oral Health, and to take leadership roles as required.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. To actively participate in the design and delivery of a range of teaching, learning, assessment and feedback activities in Dental Public Health, with a focus on behavioural sciences as applied in the clinical and community setting, in an environment that promotes scholarly learning for both undergraduate and postgraduate taught students, and aligns with the teaching objectives of the Dental School. This includes the delivery of tutorials, seminars, lectures and other didactic teaching activities and related clinical / community-based teaching. In addition, the role also involves “training the trainer” i.e. ensuring other clinical staff are trained to assess key GDC defined clinical “behaviours” (e.g. communication, delivery of prevention interventions). On average there are approximately 90 undergraduate students a year.

2. To participate in the development, design, delivery and assessment of a range of teaching, learning and assessment activities related to Dental Public Health and the clinical application of behavioural sciences in Glasgow Dental Hospital & School for postgraduate taught students including within Masters of Public Health (oral health module) and Oral Sciences Masters, .aligned with the teaching objectives of the Dental School. This includes delivery of tutorials, seminars, lectures and other didactic teaching activities, supervising postgraduate dissertations, as well as a range of assessment activities.

3. To be responsible for developing creative and innovative approaches to teaching, learning and assessments, ensuring that the quality of educational opportunities available to undergraduate and postgraduate taught students is continually enhanced. This will include on an ongoing participation in the continual development and review of both undergraduate and postgraduate curricula.

4. To work towards leading and coordinating the Community Oral Health teaching section – which involves coordinating and chairing the group and representing the section on the Dental School Learning and Teaching Committee and BDS Year Groups.

5. To provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support and enhance their learning experience.

6. To participate and engage in student mentoring and student elective programmes.

7. To undertake administrative duties associated with the delivery of teaching, learning and assessment and the academic management of the Dental School and wider School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing as determined by the Head of Section, Director of Dental Education and Head of the Dental School.

8. To undertake undergraduate teaching activity at Outreach Centres located out with the Dental School & Hospital if required.

9. To engage in scholarship relevant to the delivery of dental education and to disseminate outcomes appropriately.

10. To take the lead and coordinate the Community Oral Health teaching section including representing the section in Dental School Learning and Teaching Committee and BDS Year Groups.

11. To lead and drive the development of inclusive and innovative approaches to teaching, learning and assessment that recognise the needs of diverse student cohorts, taking appropirate responsibility for managing associated cultural changes and staff support and development – linking strongly with the Dental School Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee.

12. To undertake academic management and leadership roles and responsibilities (as determined by the Head of Section, Director of Education, and Head of the Dental School) to ensure high quality course administration, effective communication of information to internal and external stakeholders and the development of teaching and learning policy and practice across the BDS programme (and beyond subject/school level).

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

 

Knowledge/Qualifications

 

Essential: 

A1 A BDS qualification and full registration with the General Dental Council of the United Kingdom (GDC).

A2 Masters of Science degree or Higher Research Degree in Public Health or related discipline (such as dental public health, health policy/services, dental public health, or global health).

A3 Hold, or willingness to work towards, a postgraduate certificate in Academic Practice, or equivalent learning and teaching qualification.

 

For appointment at Senior University Lecturer:

A4 Recognised expertise in subject discipline/specialism to develop new knowledge and understanding within the field.

 

Desirable

B1 Fellowship in Dental Surgery or MFDS from one of the UK Royal Surgical Colleges or equivalent.

 

For appointment as Senior University Lecturer:

B2 International recognised excellence and reputation in subject area and / or scholarship of teaching in the discipline.

 

Skills

 

Essential: 

C1 Ability to deliver research-informed teaching.

C2 Excellent administrative and organisational skills.

C3 Good IT skills including the ability to work in an online environment (such as MS Teams).

C4 Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

C5 Excellent presentation skills C6 Willingness and ability to work as part of a team.

 

For appointment at Senior University Lecturer:

C7 Proven ability to plan and lead staff and efficiently deploy resources in support of major teaching activities.

C8 Track record of student supervision and development/mentorship/coaching of early career academic colleagues in subject area/team.

C9 Ability to disseminate conceptual and complex ideas to a wide variety of audiences to promote understanding.

 

Desirable

D1 Experience of online teaching platforms (such as Moodle).

 

For appointment as Senior University Lecturer:

D2 Experience of management processes in an academic environment.

D3 Academic leadership of groups / activities with substantial impact on financial and other resources.

 

Experience

 

Essential: 

E1 Minimum of 4 years post qualification with evidence of clinical experience.

E2 Some experience of delivering undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching.

E3 Experience in work related to dental public health (such as dental public health research, Community Dentistry/Public Dental Service).

 

For appointment as Senior University Lecturer:

E4 A substantial track record of quality research or scholarship and development and delivery of teaching, and proven track record of developing teaching programmes, techniques, and methods.

E5 Experience in academic assessment of dental students.

E6 Experience of mentoring students and/or staff.

E7 Experience of delivering teaching at postgraduate level.

E8 Experience of assessment of postgraduate students.

 

Desirable 

F1 Experience of mentoring students and/or staff.

F2 Experience of delivering teaching at postgraduate level.

For appointment as Senior University Lecturer:

F4 A thorough understanding of, and track record in, contributing to broader academic leadership and management at School/Service/College level.

 

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be on the Speciality Dentist/Doctor Pay Scale £52,812 - £99,975 per annum.

 

An honorary clinic contract of appropriate seniority will be arranged by application to the NHS.

 

This post is full time and open ended.
