Job description

Job Purpose

To deliver undergraduate education and carry out clinical duties in Paediatric Dentistry, including the development of innovative approaches to teaching and educational scholarship. This will take place mainly in the paediatric dentistry outreach setting.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. To play a key role in the delivery of teaching of Paediatric Dentistry to undergraduate dental students (up to 100 per year) with a focus on teaching and coordination of the paediatric outreach programme. This includes logistics and enhancing student experience in relation to accessing GA Assessment and Paediatric GA theatre lists within the GGC health board area. The role requires close collaboration with the Public Dental Service, its managerial and clinical staff and its processes.

2. To participate in the design and delivery of a range of teaching and assessment activities within Paediatric Dentistry in Glasgow Dental Hospital & School and Paediatric Outreach for undergraduate students, in accordance with the teaching objectives of the Dental School and the intended learning outcomes of the General Dental Council. This would include delivery of tutorials and potentially lectures in addition to clinical teaching.

3. To participate in the development of creative and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, ensuring that the educational opportunities available to students are maintained and significantly improved.

4. To provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support learning.

5. To undertake administrative duties associated with the delivery of undergraduate teaching.

6. To undertake the clinical duties associated with the post as appropriate to an Honorary Speciality Dentist in Paediatric Dentistry. Personal clinical duties will increase during non-term/non annual leave time. These clinical duties will address the current needs of the NHS Public Dental Service or secondary care services in Paediatric Dentistry and may include General Anaesthetic Lists or provision of care under Inhalation Sedation as well as routine clinical care.

 

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

 

Knowledge/Qualifications 

 

Essential: 

A1 Registrable qualification with the General Dental Council.

A2 Must be fully registered with the GDC at the time of post commencement.

 

Desirable:

B1 Fellowship in Dental Surgery, MFDS from one of the Royal Surgical Colleges or equivalent.

B2 Masters degree or Higher Research Degree.

B3 Hold, or working towards, a certificate in Academic Practice, or equivalent learning and teaching qualification.

B4 Working knowledge of Public Dental Service patient acceptance criteria, patient flow, processes and interaction with other services.

 

Skills

 

Essential:

C1 Ability to deliver research-informed teaching.

C2 Excellent administrative and organisational skills.

C3 Good IT skills including the ability to work in an online environment.

C4 Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.

C5 Excellent presentation skills.

C6 Willingness and ability to work as part of a team.

 

Experience

 

Essential:

E1 Minimum of 5 years post qualification with significant clinical experience in Paediatric Dentistry.

E2 Experience of delivering undergraduate clinical teaching in Paediatric Dentistry.

 

Desirable: 

F1 Experience in coordination of an undergraduate outreach programme in Paediatric Dentistry.

F2 Experience in academic assessment of dental students.

F3 Experience of mentoring students and/or staff.

 

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be on the Speciality Doctor Pay Scale £50,780 - £96,129 per annum.

 

An honorary clinic contract of appropriate seniority will be arranged by application to the NHS.

 

This post is full time and open ended.
