Job description
This is a fixed term (up to 6 years or up until six months after obtaining CCT, whichever is soonest) Clinical Lectureship tenable in the School of Health and Wellbeing (SHW). Suitable applicants will hold MRCPsych (UK)/or equivalent and will have completed general professional training in Psychiatry. The successful candidate will be appointed at the level of Specialist/Specialty Registrar and will enter the West of Scotland Higher Specialty Training Programme in General Psychiatry.
Applicants must already have a national training number at the time of taking up the post. While applicants may already hold a higher research degree (MD/PhD), talented candidates may be appointed without this qualification, although progression would be dependent upon successfully completing this qualification in the first years of the post. If the applicant does not possess a higher degree, they will be supported in developing an appropriate project, pursuing any necessary funding and executing research suitable for submission of a post-graduate degree.
The post will be based within Mental Health and Wellbeing within the SHW’s Clarice Pears Building. For training and research purposes rotation to other clinical units or departments may be required.
Clinical training in psychiatry will be a major focus of the Lectureship in order to ensure the appointee can successfully complete their CCT.
Job Purpose
The academic aim of the Lectureship would be to allow research development to support intermediate fellowship applications by the end of the lectureship and eventual growth to an independent academic career.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Research
The appointee will have an established interest in research, with a record of achievement in an area related to the existing interests within Mental Health and Wellbeing (such as affective disorders, clinical neuroscience, computational psychiatry, complex interventions, and epidemiology) and will be expected to contribute to the research and teaching work of the School of Health and Wellbeing. The appointee will be expected to develop a programme of research under the supervision of an established research/teaching leader within the School, with the intention of completing a higher degree and developing an academic career. There are extensive laboratory and clinical facilities for research, as well as access to large datasets, within the School and fruitful collaborations with other Schools in the College, College of MVLS, and related Schools and Institutes within the University of Glasgow. The successful candidate will be expected to have already or to register for a higher degree (MD/PhD).
Teaching
While the main focus of the applicant is research, teaching will represent an important component of the post. It is expected that the Clinical Lecturer will contribute to the delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities, including contributing to the design and delivery of the current BMedSci Psychological Medicine teaching programme, designing exam questions, marking exam papers/essays and participating in OSCEs.
Administrative Duties
There are no formal administrative duties written into this post; however, the successful appointee may be asked to take on a role of responsibility within the Section.
Clinical Duties
The successful appointee will join the relevant Psychiatry rotation in the West of Scotland. To allow an on-going 20% research commitment, as many parts of the rotation as possible will be organised to be completed in Glasgow. However, there are fixed components of the training that cannot be completed on site and this should be understood by the appointee and by those involved in training. The purpose of a Clinical Lectureship is to ensure that candidates acquire a CCT, and appropriate clinical training opportunities will be arranged to ensure that this can occur within the duration of the Lectureship. Responsibilities, including on call duties and specialty training will be arranged as necessary depending on the appointee's current training and needs in conjunction with the Training Programme Director and local clinical and educational supervisors.
Clinical academic training will be the focus of the post with an 80:20 split between clinical and academic activity. The allocation of research and clinical time is flexible and various patterns of working are possible to suit differing research and clinical requirements e.g. it may also be possible to organise research blocks of several weeks or months at a time. Applications will be welcome from trainees who are working less than full time, and the job plan will be adapted to suit such trainees.
