Job description
Clinical University Lecturer in Oral Pathology/Oral Medicine Human Disease/Honorary Speciality Dentist in Oral Medicine (non-training grade)
Job Purpose
The postholder will be required to deliver 5 teaching sessions across Oral Pathology, Oral Medicine & Human Disease/Medicine in relation to dentistry teaching as part of the University undergraduate BDS and PGT programmes, and 5 clinical sessions delivering NHS clinical care and supporting activity at the level of a Specialty Dentist in Oral Medicine. The post will be based within the Dental School within the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences but will be required to work across other sites.
Suitable applicants will hold a registrable dental qualification with the General Dental Council. This post would suit an applicant who is an experienced dental surgeon and has recent experience of Oral Medicine within the clinical setting and who has demonstrable teaching experience. An Honorary clinical contract of appropriate seniority will be arranged by application to the NHS.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Academic duties
To deliver clinically relevant academic undergraduate education in Oral Pathology and clinical & academic undergraduate education in Oral Medicine and Human Disease/Medicine in relation to dentistry, including reviewing existing teaching material and supporting the planning and creation of new teaching material and development of innovative teaching methods.
To play a key role in the delivery of teaching of Oral Pathology, Oral Medicine and Human Disease/Medicine in Relation to Dentistry to undergraduate dental students. (On average there are around 80-90 undergraduate students per year on the undergraduate programme).
To participate in the design and delivery of a range of teaching and assessment activities within Oral Pathology, Oral Medicine and Human Disease/Medicine in Relation to Dentistry and in accordance with the teaching objectives aligned to the Dental School. This would include delivery of pre-clinical teaching and lectures/tutorials, in addition to clinical supervision and assessment.
To participate in the development of creative and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, ensuring that the educational opportunities available to students are maintained and significantly improved.
To provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support learning.
To provide input in question setting and examination of assessments to include written examinations as well as OSCEs, and Clinical Case Exams.
To carry out longitudinal continuous assessment of students in clinics via the digital assessment platform used in Glasgow Dental School and to prepare and review the data from this type of assessment.
To undertake administrative duties associated with the delivery of undergraduate teaching.
To act as a student mentor as part of the Dental School undergraduate mentorship programme.
To carry out any other duties as assigned by the Head of Dental School and Director of Dental Education.
To assist with teaching on postgraduate programmes as required.
NHS Clinical Duties
The post holder will work within a supportive team of clinicians and contribute to all aspects of the clinical activity aligned with the Department of Oral Medicine. You will be required to provide a specialist service for local general dental and medical practitioners for outpatients with complex oral mucosal disease, patients with oral disease occurring as a manifestation of systemic disease and patients with complex facial pain.
There is no required ‘out of hours’ commitment, however, there is daily middle grade cover and consultant rota to ensure that an urgent oral medicine opinion can be provided during working hours and that referrals are appropriately triaged.
The oral medicine team have a collaborative and multidisciplinary approach to patient care both with other specialities within the Glasgow Dental Hospital, as well as the Public Dental Service and other medical specialities within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. In addition, they share their active clinical governance processes nationally with other oral medicine units in Scotland.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential
A1 BDS or equivalent dental qualification which is registrable with the General Dental Council along with full GDC registration would be required before taking up the post.
A2 Be eligible to work in the UK.
A3 Possess or be willing to undertake a postgraduate certificate in academic practice or similar postgraduate teaching qualification.
Desirable:
B1 Possession of MFDS/MFD/ MJDF or equivalent from one of the Royal Surgical Colleges or other postgraduate dental qualification.
B2 Possess a higher degree or be in the process of writing up.
Experience
Essential:
C1 Minimum of 4 years post Qualification.
C2 Recent diagnostic and treatment experience in all aspects of Oral Medicine and the ability to undertake clinical practice in Oral Medicine as part of the Oral Medicine team.
C3 Experience of managing medically compromised dental patients with the need to be familiar with the common primary care medical problems and their management, also the common medical emergencies and their management.
C4 Experience of delivery of Undergraduate (or Postgraduate) Teaching and Assessment within Oral Medicine and familiarity with teaching in Oral Pathology and Medicine in Relation to Dentistry/Human Disease.
C5 Ability to deliver Evidence-based teaching.
Desirable:
D1 Experience of teaching Oral Pathology and Medicine in Relation to Dentistry/Human Disease.
D2 Experience of leading / managing a team in an academic or clinical environment.
D2 Experience of research involvement.
D3 Evidence of publications in refereed journals.
D4 Experience of quality improvement / Audit.

This is a 1.0 WTE Clinical Lecturer post. The post will be based, in the main, within the Dental School in the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing, which is part of the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences [MVLS] at the University of Glasgow, but there will also be a requirement to work at other sites.
