Job description

Job Purpose

As a Business Analyst in the Learning and Teaching systems team, you will play an important role in bridging the gap between business needs and technological solutions. You’ll understand business requirements and identify opportunities to better utilise or implement software that aligns with the university’s current processes, systems and needs. You’ll develop a deep understanding of business processes across multiple departments, performing systems analysis on software applications and impact assessing any potential change in practices in relation to technology usage. You will document technical requirements and support testing activities. You’ll work collaboratively with the Learning & Teaching development team, architects, and business teams, progressing opportunities from development to delivery.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities 

1. Engage with business stakeholders to understand processes, challenges, and needs. Cultivate and maintain strong working relationships with business teams, ensuring open communication and trust. Post-implementation, analyse the effectiveness of solutions, ensure agreed benefits are delivered, and consider enhancements for maximum outcomes.

2. Work closely with business stakeholders to elicit, analyse, and document requirements, adhering to agreed standards/templates. Conduct interviews, workshops, and surveys to understand business needs and objectives.

3. Identify opportunities for process or systems improvement and recommending solutions that leverage technology. Analyse data to identify trends, patterns, and opportunities for improvement.

4. Collaborate with business users, architects and technical teams to translate business requirements into technical specifications and system designs.

5. Document technical specifications, implementation proposals and test requirements ensuring a clear and comprehensive understanding of system / feature deliverables.

6. Assist with QA testing and support UAT planning with business stakeholders to validate the functionality and integrity of solutions and facilitate resolution of issues identified during testing.

7. Create comprehensive documentation including business requirements documents, functional specifications, process flows, and user guides.

8. Provide detailed advice and guidance to users in the effective use of systems, investigating complex problem situations to diagnose underlying causes and helping users to recover or continue operation.

 

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience 

 

Knowledge/Qualifications

 

Essential:

A1 Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar or number of different roles. Or: Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9, (Ordinary Degree, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4), or equivalent (including professional accreditation with relevant formal training), and experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s).

A2 Excellent working knowledge and understanding of business analysis tools and techniques.

A3 Familiarity with agile development methodologies and experience working in an agile environment, including user story creation and backlog grooming.

A4 Knowledge of software testing principles, methodologies, and best practices.

 

Desirable:

B1 Familiarity with Learning Management Systems.

B2 Certification in Business Analysis.

C1 Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills.

C2 Highly effective interpersonal skills, enabling the establishment of effective working relationships with the ability to facilitate and employ a robust, flexible and resilient approach with different stakeholders.

C3 Detail-oriented with a strong focus on quality.

C5 Specialist analytical and complex problem-solving capability, including process and systems analysis.

C6 Highly proficient in capturing and managing business requirements.

C7 Able to explain technical concepts and analyses clearly and translate business objectives into actionable specifications.

C8 Ability to apply specialist skills to identify risks, dependencies and blockers using a range of tools to manage and mitigate the impact of these.

 

Desirable:

D1 Development of test plans.

 

Experience 

 

Essential:

E1 Practical experience in business analysis, utilising business analysis methods to document data structures and business processes and defining business requirements.

E2 Practical experience of stakeholder engagement and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders throughout the development cycle and beyond.

E3 Experience in translating business process information and requirements (as-is) to conceptualise the information as a technology solution (to-be).

E4 Experience of developing reports, presentations and workshops to present insights from business analysis activity and/or to present findings and recommendations for service change.

 

Desirable:

F1 Experience of system testing.

F2 Experience of Software Development Tools: Jira, QMetry or other similar tools.

F3 Familiarity with a Higher Education environment.

F4 Experience of working in an Agile project management environment.

 

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 7, £40,497 - £45,413 per annum.
