Job description

Job Purpose

To join our enthusiastic Infectious Diseases group in Veterinary Diagnostic Services (VDS) within the Division of Pathology, Public Health and Disease Investigation (PPHDI) in delivering a wide range of clinical and scholarly activities. This includes contributing to the delivery of an infectious diseases diagnostic service with a focus on companion animals, teaching undergraduates and postgraduates, and undertaking high-quality research. To carry out associated tasks as requested by the Academic Head of Infectious Disease and Head of Division to contribute to the School/College objectives and to achieve national and international excellence in clinical service, teaching and research.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

 

Clinical:

1. To contribute to the delivery of the Infectious Diseases service within Veterinary Diagnostic Services by providing a high-quality service as detailed in client service agreements. This includes offering appropriate advice to veterinary surgeons, veterinary nurses and veterinary students in the University of Glasgow and to external referring practices and research clients, thereby continuing to attract the clinical diagnostic workload necessary to support the commercial, teaching and research activities of the School. 

2. To assume an appropriate level of managerial responsibility, as directed by the Academic Head of Infectious Disease, in order that the quality-of-service provision is maintained across the service.

3. To be proactive in the development of novel laboratory tests to aid diagnosis and treatment, in consultation with the Academic Head of Infectious Disease. This will be primarily in the area of companion animal diagnostics and will enhance the income generating capability of the service.

4. To develop an international reputation in companion animal infectious diseases while developing and enhancing the research profile of the discipline.

5. To support the training of clinical scholars (residents in infectious disease/veterinary public health), with a view to their successful completion of appropriate examinations.

6. To undertake continued personal development, in compliance with the requirements of the RCVS.

 

Teaching:

7. To take responsibility for the organisation and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities, as directed by the Head of Division in consultation with course and module leaders. 

8. To contribute to the on-going development and design of the BVMS and VetBio BSC. curricula in a manner that supports a research-led approach to student learning. 

9. To take responsibility for course reviews, as appropriate, and participate in the summative and formative assessment of students within the undergraduate curriculum.

10. To support the development of creative and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, in accordance with the University’s Quality Enhancement Strategy, so that the educational opportunities available to students are maintained or improved. 

11. To lead and engage in the delivery of a range of assessment activities and engage fully in the examination processes as appropriate, using a variety of methods and techniques, and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support learning. 

12. To actively contribute to the training programme for Clinical Scholars (Residents in Infectious Diseases/Veterinary Public Health) by acting as a principal supervisor or co-supervisor. 

13. To act as advisor of studies for undergraduate veterinary students.

 

Clinical Research:

14. To collaborate in clinical/diagnostic investigations and evidence-based medicine and develop a consistent output of publications in international, high-quality, peer-reviewed clinical/veterinary pathology scientific journals and textbooks.

15. To supervise postgraduate students (MVM/Resident and PhD level).

16. To provide undergraduate vacation/Honours projects as required. 

17. To attend and participate in national/international events/research seminars/conferences relevant to the service area. 

18. To contribute to external funding applications required to under-pin the long-term growth of the field of infectious diseases, ideally from a ‘One Health’ perspective. 

19. To be an primary investigator and/or co-investigator for research grants, as appropriate.

 

Administration:

20. To undertake Divisional and School-level administration as requested by the Head of Division/Head of School. 

21. To contribute to the Performance & Development Review process as appropriate and in accordance with University strategy.

 

Engagement:

22. To participate in promotional activities and events related to Veterinary Diagnostic Services and Division of Pathology, Public Health & Disease Investigation.

 

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

 

Knowledge/Qualifications 

 

Essential:

A1 Veterinary degree registerable with the RCVS.

A2 PhD in a related area.

A3 Possession of, or eligibility to sit, the qualifying examination for a specialist postgraduate veterinary qualification (e.g. ECVPH, ECVM or ACVM) within 1 year of appointment.

A4 A good track record of development and delivery of teaching.

 

Desirable:

B1 Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.

 

Skills

 

Essential:

C1 Expertise across the field of infectious disease, corresponding to training and qualifications, and the ability to provide expert advice to internal and external clinicians and researchers.

C2 Excellent communication skills both orally and written.

C3 Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills.

C4 Time/project and people management skills.

C5 Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

C6 Self-motivated, able to plan for contingencies and think strategically.

C7 Ability to accept collegiate responsibilities and act accordingly.

 

Experience

 

Essential:

E1 Evidence of conducting and publishing research in peer-reviewed, international scientific journals.

E2 Evidence of involvement in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

E3 Experience of veterinary clinical practice.

 

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 8, £50,253 - £58,225 per annum.
