Job description

Job Purpose

A Technician position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Christopher Moxon at the Centre for Parasitology, University of Glasgow. We are an innovative and exciting group investigating the role of host-parasite interactions in the immunopathogenesis of cerebral malaria. We are interested in the causes of blood-brain barrier involved in adverse outcome and in identifying treatment targets to improve outcome in patients. To do this, our lab uses a mixture of cutting-edge Omics and imaging approaches in patient samples and in vitro.

To manage and deliver high quality technical services for teaching laboratories including providing specialist technical expertise in the relevant discipline. You will have responsibility for the organisation and efficient usage of teaching lab space including day-to-day running of the lab[s], including equipment, apparatus and consumables and day-to-day management of specialist facilities and technical support staff. In addition, the postholder may be responsible for overseeing practical skills labs and workshops for students.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

 

1. Provide in-depth technical knowledge, solutions, and advice to service users to maximise the learning experience and/or contribute to the delivery of research objectives. Where required, support the supervision of students within the research group.

2. Provide specialist technical advice to research team including research, teaching and technical staff and undergraduate and post-graduate/PhD students. Where required, support the supervision of students within the research group.

3. Develop, create and test new  systems, procedures, protocols, models and/or techniques. Diagnose faults and troubleshoot day-to-day problems carrying out appropriate maintenance as required.

4. Design, plan and organise technical activities to meet the needs of service users within agreed timescales.

5. Independently generate ideas and implement agreed proposals for experimental strategies.

6. Collect, analyse and interpret data using standard procedures and ensure that accurate records are kept and databases are updated accordingly.

7. Keep up to date with developments in relevant research/technical areas and within the broader discipline to ensure contribution to research goals is optimised.

8. Undertake complex data analysis, identifying trends, problems, or anomalies, and present findings clearly to research group and/or to wider audiences via presentations or within appropriate research publications.

9. Where relevant, maintain appropriate stock levels, including appropriate preparation of specialised media and samples as required, and purchase consumables and supplies within defined budget. Ensure safe implementation and ongoing storage of potentially hazardous materials.

10. Be responsible for the day-to-day management of and compliance with relevant Health and Safety and/or other specialist legal requirements. Maintain all necessary records in accordance with set requirements, keep up to date with developments or legal changes relevant to the work of the research group and advise and train group members as appropriate.

11. Where relevant, take day to day control of research budget, creating spending plans, monitoring outgoings and targets and providing summary reports to PIs as required.

12. Collaborate with colleagues and participate in team meetings/discussions and contribute to the wider College/Institute/School activities as required.

 

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

 

Qualifications/Knowledge

Essential

A1. Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 8 [Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4, Higher National Diploma] or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role.

A2. Detailed technical knowledge and expertise in relevant discipline.

A3. Up to date knowledge of relevant legislative requirements applicable to the role, including by not limited to Health and Safety.

 

Desirable

B1. MSc Degree or equivalent in relevant discipline.

B2. Working towards Professional Registration with relevant body.

 

Skills

Essential

C1. Demonstrable in-depth technical skills aligned to the specified discipline or assigned research project. Details of the discipline/project are as described in the post-specific information and advert.

C2. Significant IT skills, including proficient user of relevant specialist and standard software packages.

C3. Significant analytical and problem-solving capability, including high degree of accuracy and attention to detail when dealing with complex data.

C4. Proven interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to understand, conceptualise, and interpret technical requirements of a research group and adapt own style to meet the needs of others.

C5. Excellent teamworking skills and where relevant to the post, supervisory or line management skills.

C6. Ability to plan and prioritise workload to meet competing demands.

 

Experience

Essential

E1. Significant relevant work experience within a similar environment, including evidence of previous professional development.

E2. Experience of molecular and cellular biology

E3. Cell culture techniques

E4. Experience of microscopy and imaging

E5. Experience of understanding and interpreting the technical requirements of service users and implementing appropriate methods of achieving their needs.

E6. Experience of planning and organising own workload to meet the needs of service users.

 

Desirable

F1. Experience of molecular cloning and DNA techniques, qPCR,

F2. Experience of transfections and stable cell line generation

F2. Experience of immunoblotting, ELISA

F3. Experience of parasite/plasmodial culture.

 

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 6, £33,951 - £37,694 per annum.

 

This post is full time and open ended with funding available for up to 12 months from the start date.
