Job description

Job Purpose

 

To support and coordinate as appropriate, the delivery of MOOC Programmes in the James Watt School of Engineering (JWSE). This will include supporting the redevelopment of the current provision and coordination, and delivery of academic content. To teach and to actively contribute to the knowledge, understanding, and skills of students in the JWSE. Coordinate academic delivery in this area and contribute as required to the general academic administrative duties of MOOC programmes. To liaise with academic colleagues within JWSE and University-wide, to develop a vibrant and attractive MOOC portfolio providing excellent training and student experience at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

 

1. To work with clusters of programmes to coordinate the re-development of programme plans and to assist in the development and coordination of new academic content.

2. Contribute to course creation, development, and delivery, including tutoring support, within the programmes. Working with teams of academics and in coordination with the MOOC administrative team as required.

3. Support the development of creative and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, by the University’s Quality Enhancement Strategy, so that the educational opportunities available to students are maintained at the University’s high standards. Contribute to the design and coordinate the implementation of new teaching and learning approaches.

4. Engage in scholarship by undertaking methodologically rigorous, educationally relevant enquiries into student learning and disseminate evidence to enhance your own, and potentially others’, teaching practices. Attend and participate in appropriate seminars and conferences to support research-led teaching, scholarship, and/or professional practice in your disciplinary area.

5. Maintain and develop knowledge in the subject area through liaisons with the undergraduate teaching schools and the research institutes.

6 Make effective use of learning technologies, especially suitable for MOOC and online teaching, to support and enhance course delivery, course organisation, feedback, and assessment. This may involve blended and/or online provision.

7. Ensure an inclusive and evidence-based approach to facilitating learning in a range of MOOC/online and face-to-face delivery formats, such as tutorials, lectures, and problem-based learning, that promotes student participation and learning outcome attainment.

8. Develop effective working relationships with students and, in partnership with relevant student services teams, respond appropriately to the diverse range of learning approaches and learner needs.

9. Participate in local and potentially overseas activities associated with student recruitment (e.g., open days), orientation and induction, and other School and University initiatives such as support for student transitions, employability, and student mobility as appropriate.

10. Undertake other MOOC-related duties as required.

 

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

 

Knowledge/Qualifications

 

Essential:

A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification level 10 (Honours degree or equivalent) in engineering or science and may be working towards post-graduate qualification such as a Masters (Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 11) or PhD (Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12).

A2 Specialist knowledge in a relevant subject area to aid the ability to coordinate and develop teaching.

 

Desirable:

B1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or equivalent in a related discipline and/or teaching experience.

B2 Knowledge of AI technology and its application in engineering and science education.

B3 Knowledge in generative AI tools and large language models (LLMs), and their application in engineering and science education.

B4 Familiarity with educational project administration and coordination.

 

Skills

 

Essential:

C1 Excellent interpersonal, organisational, presentation, and communication (written and oral) skills with the ability to deal with issues using tact, diplomacy, and discretion.

C2 Enthusiastic approach to teaching and learning, including communication with students and academic staff.

C3 Possess proven time, project, and people management skills.

C4 Ability to use initiative and to exercise independent judgement.

C5 Ability to work independently and as part of a team to meet tight deadlines.

C6 Ability to work proactively, multitask, and show a high degree of responsibility.

C7 Ability to accept collegiate responsibilities and act accordingly.

 

Desirable:

D1 Experience in coordinating a teaching programme.

D2 Evidence of involvement in establishing new courses or programmes, from idea generation to programme approval.

 

Experience

 

Essential:

E1. Experience in contributing to teaching in a subject area related to the JWSE.

E2 Experience of planning and progressing work activities within professional guidelines or organisational policy, applying initiative and independent judgement.

E3 Demonstrated commitment to open research, as appropriate to the discipline, through open data, open code, open educational resources, and practices that support replication.

E4 Proven commitment to supporting the career development of colleagues and to other forms of collegiality appropriate to the career stage.

 

Desirable:

F1 Experience in designing and delivering MOOCs, including developing tutorials, assessments, and administering platforms such as Coursera.

F2 Experience in research and publications in education methodology.

F3 Experience in teaching AI-focused BSc/MSc programmes, especially delivering hands-on sessions and tutorials.

F4 Experience in using multimedia and interactive digital learning technologies.

 

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 6, £33,951 - £37,694 per annum.

 

This post is full time and fixed term for up to 3 years.
