Job Purpose

To deliver Postgraduate Taught Programmes (PGT) in the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences (MVLS), particularly on courses related to: animal welfare science, ethics and law; habitat creation, monitoring and assessment; and One Health. To teach and to actively contribute to the knowledge, understanding and skills of postgraduate students in the College of MVLS. Work within a team to ensure academic delivery in this area and to contribute as required to the general academic administrative duties of PGT programmes. To liaise with academic colleagues within MVLS and University-wide, to develop a vibrant and attractive PGT portfolio providing excellent training and student experience at postgraduate level.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Work with clusters of programmes to contribute to the re-development of programme plans and implement the development and co-ordination of new academic content.

2. Contribute to course creation, development and delivery, including tutoring support, within the programmes. Working with teams of academics and in coordination with the PGT administrative team as required.

3. Support the development of creative and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, in accordance with the University’s Quality Enhancement Strategy, so that the educational opportunities available to students are maintained at the University’s high standards. Contribute to the design and coordinate the implementation of new teaching and learning approaches.

4. Engagement in scholarship to support teaching and student support activities and applying up-to date research to all teaching. Ensuring necessary input of expert material into courses from contributing academics and external sources where required.

5. Maintain and develop knowledge in the subject area through liaison with the schools in the college.

6. Keep abreast with advancements in technology, their applications, and continually updating both knowledge and skills in support of teaching excellence as appropriate to the subject area.

7. Provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support their learning; and to ensure that appropriate structures are built into the programme to ensure a consistent approach from all contributors.

8. Provide support to colleagues to aid development of teaching and contribute to the ongoing development and design of the current PGT programmes run by the College of MVLS.

9. Work with colleagues in other areas of the University to provide consistent teaching, assessment, and feedback across our PGT programmes.

10. Participate in recruitment and conversion, induction, and orientation activities as appropriate.

11. Undertake other PGT related duties as requested by the Dean of Learning & Teaching or delegate.

For Appointment at Grade 7:

12. Undertake other PGT related duties, including management and leadership activities, as requested by the Dean of Learning & Teaching or delegate.

12. Participate in the performance and development review processes, as appropriate, in accordance with university strategy.

13. Contribute to the implementation of the College Education Strategy.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential:

A1. A first degree in a relevant subject area to MVLS.

A2 Specialist knowledge in  ecology and/or animal behavioural ecology or a related subject area to aid the ability to coordinate and develop teaching in these areas.

A3. A Master’s degree in a relevant subject area to MVLS.

For appointment at Grade 7:

A4. A PhD in a relevant subject area to MVLS or equivalent teaching experience.

Desirable:

B1. Knowledge of university academic policy and procedures.

B2. Knowledge of e-learning, teaching methodology, learning design and pedagogy.

B3. Specialist knowledge relating to ecological consultancy, human-wildlife conflict and/or One Health, particularly in the context of climate change.

Skills

Essential:

C1. Excellent interpersonal, organisational, presentation and communication (written and oral) skills with the ability to deal with issues using tact, diplomacy, and discretion.

C2. Enthusiastic approach to teaching and learning, including communication with students and academic staff.

C3. Ability to use initiative and to exercise independent judgement.

C4. Possess proven time, project, and people management skills.

C5. Ability to work proactively, multi-task and show a high degree of responsibility.

Experience

Essential:

E1. Experience of delivering postgraduate teaching in disciplines related to MVLS PGT programmes.

For Appointment at Grade 7:

E2. Experience of delivering postgraduate teaching and assessment in disciplines related to MVLS PGT programmes.

Desirable

F1. Experience of co-ordinating a teaching programme.

F2. Experience of developing teaching content.

F3. Record of accomplishment in published research and/or delivery of teaching in a subject related area.

F4. Experience of working in virtual learning environments.

F5. Experience of teaching in an international institution or with international students.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 6/7, £33,482 - £37,174/£40,497 - £45,413 per annum

This post is full-time (35 hours per week) and to cover maternity leave for up to 12 months or until the substantive postholder returns.
