Research Assistant in Anti-(trans)gender Politics in Asia
Job Purpose
Join a leading School of Social and Political Science to work on the funded Anti-gender Politics in Asia project. This role offers an outstanding opportunity to contribute to a major project exploring how the trans people in Asia are discriminated against socially, politically, institutionally and interpersonally in their home countries. You will be a key part of a project team playing a pivotal role in research network building, data collection, analysis and the production of research outputs. Together we will work with scholars and activists to coproduce knowledge that supports Asian trans people’s lives. The position offers the successful candidate a chance to shape this important research agenda whilst benefitting from the wider career development opportunities globally. Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Perform the following activities in conjunction with the Principal Investigator (PI) as appropriate:
Take a leading role in the planning and conduct of assigned research in accordance with the project objectives.
Survey the research literature and political context in Asia, understand the theoretical and practical challenges associated with the project and subject area, and develop/implement suitable research strategies.
Conduct primary research to support the project, and undertake analysis and interpretation of all data, maintain records and databases, draft progress reports and papers as appropriate, produce a documentary, and coordinate the collective writing of an edited book about Anti-gender Politics in Asia.
Write up research findings/outcomes for publication in leading academic journals, trade journals and the media for dissemination.
Work collaboratively with project partners to enhance research impact in terms of economic/societal benefit and identify opportunities for knowledge exchange.
Present work effectively to a range of academic and non-academic audiences, including at international conferences, seminars, colloquia and workshops.
Take a leading role in developing and maintaining collaborations with colleagues across the project and wider community.
Take a leading role in organising and managing team/group meetings and activities to ensure the effective running of the project.
Perform administrative tasks related to the activities of the project and School, including budgets/expenditure.
Take a leading role in organising and coordinating international team gathering events, including but not limited to international conferences, writing workshops in Asia.
Engage in personal, professional and career development, to enhance both specialist and transferable skills in accordance with desired career trajectory.
Carry out other duties, commensurate with the grade and remit of the post as agreed with the PI.
To contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan - World Changers Together.

Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential
A1 SCQF Level 10 (Honours degree) in a relevant subject or a cognate discipline, or equivalent.
A2 Specialist theoretical and practical knowledge in areas relevant to the field of research.
A3 A comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of the wider subject area or subject specialism.
Desirable
B1 Knowledge of project-specific data sources.
Skills
Essential
C1 Research creativity and ability to collaborate across disciplines, as appropriate.
C2 Excellent oral and written communication skills, including public presentations and the ability to communicate complex data and concepts clearly and concisely.
C3 Excellent interpersonal skills, including effective team working and a collegiate approach.
C4 Strong workload, time, project, budget and people management skills, as appropriate.
C5 Extensive IT skills, including data analysis and interpretation, as appropriate.
C6 High levels of self-motivation, initiative and ability to work independently.

C8 Willingness to travel in the UK and internationally (mainly in Asia) to attend conferences as required by the project.
Experience
Essential
E1 Sufficient relevant research experience (or equivalent) appropriate to an early career researcher.
E2 Project- or subject-specific research experience.
E3 Experience of scientific writing.
E4 Proven ability to deliver high-quality outputs in a timely and efficient manner.
E5 Evidence of an emerging track record of high-quality research publications in a relevant field.
Desirable
F1 Pre-established connections with the scholars and activists working on (anti) trans politics in Asia or related topics.
F2 Be able to contribute research about anti-gender politics in an Asian country context.
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 6, £33,951 - £37,694 per annum pro rata.
This post is part time (7 hours per week) and fixed term for up to 31st December 2027 (with an anticipated start date as soon as practicable following completion of the recruitment process).
