Job Purpose
A unique and exciting opportunity has arisen for a KTP Research Associate with expertise in mathematical modelling and fluid mechanics to lead an innovative Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) between the University of Glasgow and Quanta Dialysis Technologies Limited (https://quantadt.com/us/), tackling the challenges associated with traditional dialysis treatment. This position is co-funded by Innovate UK and Quanta. Kidney disease is one of the leading causes of mortality across the globe, with millions of patients dying each year without access to affordable treatment. Except for transplantation, dialysis treatment remains the only option for patients with kidney disease to keep living, with toxins and excess fluid from the patient’s blood filtered through an artificial kidney known as a dialyser. The Research Associate will leverage Quanta's unique capability for fluid pulsation – a first in the dialysis industry – to pioneer the development and optimisation of a suite of mathematical models for novel flow modalities within dialysers for enhanced, sustainable and cost-effective treatment of acute and chronic kidney disease. The associate will lead the collaboration between the experimental and software teams at Quanta Dialysis Technologies and the academic supervisors (Dr Katarzyna Kowal and Dr Matthew Durey) at the University of Glasgow.
The KTP Associate will be employed by the University of Glasgow and predominantly based at Quanta’s site in Warwick.
About the Industrial Partner
Quanta Dialysis Technologies is a medical device company founded in 2008 with the goal to bring to market its proprietary technology for the delivery of renal replacement therapies, specifically haemodialysis, across the three segment settings of acute, chronic and in-home needs/requirements.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Reduce a complex fluid-mechanical solute transport problem to a tractable mathematical model that can be benchmarked against Quanta’s experimental data.
2. Perform numerical simulations of the model to optimise Quanta’s innovative treatment modalities.
3. Facilitate effective three-way knowledge transfer between the business partner, Associate and knowledge base, using Quanta’s proprietary technology, practical expertise and experimental data to drive research innovation and embedding novel modelling practices directly into the business.
4. Collaborate closely with Quanta’s experimental and software teams to transform the optimised treatment modalities into a ready-for-market technology.
5. Integrate fundamental modelling practices into Quanta's standard processes, procedures and methodologies, ultimately leading the foundation for a new modelling group within Quanta.
6. Undertake experiments to (i) ensure the software sequences operate as intended to match those developed for numerical simulation and (ii) take clearance measurements using optical spectroscopy to further understand the mechanism of clearance within the dialyser.
7. Work with other members of the Quanta engineering team to establish a broader numerical modelling capability with the team.
8. Disseminate research outputs via peer-reviewed publications in leading scientific journals and presentations at major international and national conferences.

Essential:
A1 Normally Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) plus track record of emerging independence within a research/professional environment, or alternatively possess professional qualifications and experience equivalent to PhD level plus the requisite experience.

C1 Strong cross-discipline collaborative ability.
C2 Excellent communication skills (written and oral), with the ability to communicate complex data/concepts clearly and concisely, to effectively disseminate the KTP findings.
C3 Excellent interpersonal skills for facilitating effective knowledge transfer.
Desirable:
D1 Experience of leading a team.
D2 Experience of managing a project and delivering pre-set targets in a relevant field.
Experience
Essential:
E1 Background knowledge of fluid mechanics and mathematical modelling.
E2 Knowledge of numerical techniques for simulating fluid-mechanical phenomena.
Desirable:
F1 Proficiency in analytical techniques for deriving reduced mathematical models.
F2 Knowledge of numerical techniques for simulating solute transport.
F3 Knowledge of filtration or related solute transport phenomena.
F4 Experience of using lubrication theory to model thin-film flows.
F5 A track record of presentation and publication of research results in quality journals/conferences.
