Job Purpose

 

Clinical Innovation Fellow (2 posts available)

The role will be split with 50% of the time dedicated to DHVL activities, 20% to PG Cert and 30% clinical.

 

As a Clinical Innovation Fellow (CIF) you will play a key role in the clinical project management and delivery of evaluations within the Digital Health Validation Lab (DHVL). You will be responsible for tracking progress and providing final reports to the DHVL operations team.

 

The Clinical Innovation Fellow (CIF) is a core member of the Digital Health Validation Lab (DHVL) team as well as the relevant clinical team based on the QEUH Campus.

 

DHVL activities will be focused on evaluating a range of health technologies in collaboration with academic and industry partners. This will include facilitating access to appropriate clinical expertise, helping formulate research protocols, contributing to collaborative grant applications and to the successful delivery of projects across a range of clinical areas.

 

The CIF will also be expected to engage with relevant Research & Innovation personnel to ensure successful delivery from project inception to final reporting. The CIF will be supported by the DHVL operations team and will report to the Portfolio Manager and Clinical Director & Academic Lead.

 

Areas of current projects for example are

-           Artificial intelligence for imaging interpretation

-           Medical technologies for stroke characterization

-           Case finding and optimization of risk stratification in Diabetes

-           Orthopaedic Surgical planning using digital tools

-           Respiratory device innovation for COPD care

 

Clinical activities will be in a clinical speciality in QEUH campus including but not limited to Medicine, Surgery, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics and Emergency Medicine. You will play a fundamental role in the clinical team gaining experience in all aspects of the selected departments care pathways. The relevant clinical department will train you, develop your clinical skills and knowledge and help you achieve your future career goals. You will take part in a relevant education programme which will provide you with the core teaching and supervision similar to that of a clinical fellow / junior doctor rota. The role will include 20% of time dedicated to achieving a PG Cert in health economics and health technology assessment. There will be the opportunity to attend and present at local and international meetings and to generate poster and publications aligned to innovation activity

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1.    Develop a comprehensive understanding of clinical workflows relevant to the health technology under operation.

2.    Proactively engage with clinical teams from a range of disciplines, acting as the first point of contact for clinicians and volunteers.

3.    Collaborate with Research and Innovation (R&I) teams to design clinical studies, including protocol development, approvals and initiate study.

4.    Lead on the recruitment of volunteers for trials, implementing strategies to improve recruitment, with support from DHVL/Living Lab operations teams and peers.

5.    Work collaboratively with appropriate experts (e.g. statisticians, health economists, DHVL operation team members etc.) to ensure robust design and delivery.

6.    Maintain accurate records and contribute to the recording, monitoring and evaluation processes of the DHVL.

7.    Prepare concise summary reports and effectively communicate study results and findings to the operations team, clinicians, researchers, innovators and wider audiences as required.

8.    Support and participate in patient and public engagement activities in conjunctions with DHVL communications teams to ensure inclusive and meaningful activities.

9.    Provide information and updates to support funding reports and presentations and present progress and updates at meetings with funders and strategic partners as required.

 

The Fellow will be encouraged to register for a higher degree (MD or PhD) as potential progression of the post.

 

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

 

Knowledge/Qualifications

 

Essential

A1.   MBChB or equivalent

A2.   Applicants should have achieved foundation level competencies and have worked for at least 24 months within the NHS

A3.   Full registration with General Medical Council & License to Practice

A4.   Knowledge of UK clinical research legal and regulatory requirements

A5.   Completed Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training

A6.   Knowledge of and understanding the NHS GGC R&D processes

A7.   Should not hold a CCT or be within 6 months of CCT on intended start date

A8.   An understanding of public patient involvement and engagement (PPIE) in research.[MD1]

 

Desirable

B1.   Post graduate examination (i.e., MCRP / MRCEM / MRCS)

B2.   Peer reviewed publication

B3.   Completion of CST / IMT or equivalent

D1.   Distinctions or prizes during undergraduate or postgraduate training.

D2.   Previous research experience.

D3.   Previous oral or poster presentations at national or international conferences.

D4.   Critical reading and writing skills including analysis, synthesis and interpretation of results.

 

Clinical experience 

 

Essential

E1.   Clinical experience in General Medicine, Surgical or related specialties equivalent with over 24 months experience

E2.   Broad interest in academic medicine and awareness of ethical issues

E3.   Previous experience in design and/or delivery of clinical education

E4.   Evidence of engagement in quality improvement and audit

E5.   Evidence of engagement with research, completion of Good Clinical Practice certification

E6.   Experience of working within a clinical multidisciplinary team (MDT)

 

Desirable

F1.   Experience of working in the QEUH campus Glasgow and or similar working environment.

F2.   Experience in recruiting for clinical trials or clinical studies

F3.   Practical experience in writing and submitting ethics applications, presenting ethics applications to ethics committees, submitting revisions and obtaining approvals

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be on the Clinical Academic scale £ 48,288- £91,753 depending on experience.

 

These posts have not been approved for Training purposes by NES. To practice medicine in the UK you need to hold both GMC registration and a current licence to practice. All candidates must be available to commence work on 06/08/2025.
