Job description

Job Purpose

As an Automation Developer in the Automation Service, you will play a pivotal role in designing, developing and testing automated solutions to reduce manual, repetitive tasks across the University. In addition to developing new automations, you will be responsible for the ongoing support, monitoring, and optimisation of existing automation processes, ensuring they continue to deliver value and operate reliably. You will work closely with business teams throughout the automation lifecycle and act as a process controller to ensure smooth operation and continuous improvement of deployed solutions.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Stakeholder Engagement & Collaboration

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to identify automation opportunities and understand business requirements.

  • Translate business requirements into innovative, robust, and secure automation solutions to reduce manual effort for business teams.

 

Design, Development & Implementation

  • Design and develop automation solutions using industry-leading tools such as UiPath (preferred), Blue Prism, Automation Anywhere, and Microsoft Power Platform.

- Build, test, and deploy automation workflows for automating repetitive tasks and processes.

  • Provide technical expertise and support to ensure the successful implementation and transition of automation solutions into live environments.

 

Maintenance & Support

  • Monitor live automation processes to ensure they are running as expected and intervene when issues arise.

  • Provide first and second line user support to manage and resolve incidents, bugs, and performance issues in a timely manner.

  • Maintain and update existing automation solutions in response to business or system changes.

  • Support the implementation of change requests through structured change control processes.

 

Quality, Documentation & Best Practice

  • Complete and maintain Process Design Documentation and support documentation to a high standard.

  • Adhere to best practices and University standards for development, testing, security, and data integrity.

  • Participate in peer reviews and feasibility assessments for new and existing processes.

  • Continuously improve automation solutions based on performance metrics and user feedback.

 

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

 

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential:

A: Either: Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar or number of different roles. Or: Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9, (Ordinary Degree, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4), or equivalent (including professional accreditation with relevant formal training), and experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s).

A2 Substantial knowledge of deploying technologies to design, monitor, and improve business processes.

 

Desirable:

B1 Industry-recognised automation certification.

 

Skills

Essential:

C1 Effective communication and presentation skills to interact with the wider Automation Service, business teams and central functions.

C2 Strong interpersonal skills to build effective working relationships and work well with others in a cross-functional team environment.

C3 Ability to test, debug, and maintain automation scripts, using both automated and manual methods, to ensure they work as intended.

C4 Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to investigate and devise technical solutions to a range of problems to facilitate learning, teaching and support services.

C5  Ability to plan tasks and workload using an Agile approach to complete an automation implementation within agreed timescales.

C6 Ability to explain technical concepts and analyses clearly and translate business objectives into actionable technical solutions.

 

Experience

Essential:

E1 Substantial experience developing digital solutions.

E2 Experience managing a software development lifecycle including requirements analysis and automation design, development and testing.

E3 Experience supporting and maintaining live automation processes.

E4 Experience using version control systems and CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Azure DevOps, Git).

E5 Experience creating and documenting test procedures.

E6 Experience working in a fast-paced, project-oriented environment.

 

Desirable:

F1 Experience in a Higher Education environment.

F2 Experience with RPA tools (UiPath, Blue Prism), SQL, and APIs.

F3 Experience with Microsoft Power Apps and Power Automate.

F4 Familiarity with automation environments and security best practices.

F5 Experience with Agile and SDLC methodologies.
