Culture & values

The future holds innumerable challenges for our sector, our society, and our world. We will have to adapt and change what we do and what we offer if we are to navigate these successfully. Our strategy and approach may evolve as the landscape changes, but our values will remain constant: a fixed point of certainty in uncertain times.

We have identified our values in consultation and partnership with our staff and student community. Living and upholding these values will ensure that we remain true to the spirit of our community and ourselves.

Ambition and excellence

We have built the infrastructure to support excellence in all we do and to provide encouragement and

development for everybody in the organisation.

  • We strive for excellence through our work

  • We defend academic freedom globally

  • We recognise and celebrate shared success

  • We have an unrelenting focus on development

Curiosity and discovery

We embrace new thinking and innovation in a spirit of open minded collaboration. This positively impacts on ourselves,

our University, our city, society and the world.

  • We innovate and solve problems together

  • We lead by influence and example

  • We engage with lifelong learning and personal development

  • We learn from our mistakes

An inclusive community

We embrace diversity universally and put people at the heart of everything we do. We collaborate internally and externally in pursuit of our mission and we are uncompromising in achieving fairness and equity of opportunity for all.

  • We are one Glasgow team and we care for and respect one another

  • We advocate for diversity and believe in variety as a vital part of a healthy university

  • We champion education as an engine for social progress

  • We practise and advance sustainability

Integrity and Truth

Doing the right thing, not the easy thing and doing everything with integrity or not at all. Trusting people do what they’re skilled to do and taking responsibility.

  • We uphold honesty, integrity and fairness

  • We share our work widely and generously

  • We do the right thing, not the easy thing – or we don’t do it

  • We take responsibility

Colleague Engagement at UoG

We run regular colleague engagement surveys. The survey covers topics related to colleagues' experiences of working at the University, and seeks to understand our changing needs so that we can make this the best place possible to work. Highlights from our most recent survey include:

  • 8 out of 10 colleagues agree “Individual differences (e.g. cultures, backgrounds, ideas) are respected at the University".

  • 79% agree or strongly agree with “I am proud to work for the University

  • More than three quarters of colleagues would still like to be working at the University in two years’ time, 7 points higher than other HEIs, 2 points higher than the Russell Group and 6 points higher than other Scottish HEIs. More than a third of colleagues strongly agree that they still want to be here in two years.

  • If asked, 71% of colleagues would recommend the University as a place to work to friends and family
