Job Purpose

 

The Wolfson Wohl Cancer Research Centre within the School of Cancer Sciences are seeking to appoint a Washroom Assistant. The purpose of the job is to support the infrastructure of the WWCRC by running the wash up & autoclave facility. Removing and autoclaving waste and providing a sterilisation and wash up service for the research laboratories with the WWCRC Building. Overseeing the equipment within the washroom, diagnosing and reporting faults. A large part of this role includes manual handling of waste daily and assisting with ad hoc equipment deliveries and relocation. Post holder would provide general laboratory assistance and support to the building as required.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

 

1.       Operate the WWCRC Wash up facility, including the collection and processing of laboratory biological waste by autoclaving and disposal, reporting to the SCS Chief Technician. Ensure all waste is disposed of safely and appropriately as set out in the WWCRC Waste Management Policy. Ensuring accurate records are maintained.

2.       Collect glassware, plasticware and other laboratory materials daily, operate machine washing and sterilising as required; ensuring effective quality control is carried out.

3.       Autoclave and sterilise solutions and media and tips and plasticware planning workload according to changing building user demands.

4.       Diagnose technical faults / problems with wash up room equipment / protocols. Where possible instigate solutions and resolve self and advise WWCRC core staff accordingly when not resolved.  Co-ordinate with engineers to provide a simple diagnostics solution to fix or advise core technical staff if call out required.

5.       Monitor and restock consumable stock levels within the tissue culture rooms and centrally, reporting to core technical staff for orders or equipment faults.

6.       Co-ordinate dry ice delivery and distribution weekly ensuring appropriate containers are filled. Adhering to strict Health and Safety requirements and advising of any shortfalls.

7.       Provide advice on request to staff and students working in the WWCRC Building on best practice within the WWCRC building for deliveries and wash up service provision ensuring compliance is met.

8.       Responsible for Health and Safety and risk assessments and ensure best practice maintained. Reporting any issues.

9.       As part of the LEAF sustainability, take ownership of sustainable waste practices in WWCRC including collecting polystyrene boxes and cardboard ensuring disposal via recycling routes where possible.

10.  Manual handling of waste, glassware and moving equipment and occasionally gas cylinders ensuring it is carried out in a safe manner.

11.   Responsible for monitoring the lab coat washing service including, autoclaving, collecting and distribution ensuring stock levels are maintained.

12.  Work with other technical staff on an ad hoc basis were necessary to provide building support services including manual handling and assist with piped gas regulator connections as required.

13.  Flush out laboratory eye wash unit on a weekly basis ensuring records are kept.

 

This is not an exhaustive list but highlights key tasks, which the post holder may be reasonably expected to perform. This post requires manual handling that includes regular lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, moving or carrying a load

 

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

 

Knowledge / Qualifications

Essential

A1 Either:  Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar role.  Or:  Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 4 in English and Mathematics (National 4) or equivalent, and some experience of working in a similar role.

A2 Knowledge of waste streams, glass washing and sterilisation procedures.

A3 Understanding of relevant health and Safety policies and procedures relative to the role, and the quality outputs and standards required.

A4 Understanding of safe Manual handling techniques.

 

Desirable

B1 Knowledge of Health and Safety Procedures, including the hazards associated with handling biological waste and chemicals.

B2 Knowledge of laboratory equipment and machinery

B3 Knowledge of waste Management and disposal streams.

B4 Manual handling and First Aid training.

 

Skills

Essential

C1 IT skills including standard software programmes

C2 Ability to work effectively with others, including own team and lab users.

C3 Ability to plan and prioritise workload to meet competing demands.

C4 Ability to exchange work related information effectively.

C5 Good communication skills to deal with service enquiries from staff and students in a courteous manner.

Experience

Essential

E1 Experience of planning and organising own workload to meet the needs of service users.

 

Desirable

F1 Knowledge and experience of changing gas cylinders and regulators.

 

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 3, £24,685 - £25,249 per annum.

 

This post is full time and open ended.

 

A flexible approach would be required to provide a limited wash up service for a day during the Christmas holiday period to support research staff.

Working hours would be 7am – 3pm with some degree of flexibility.
