Job Purpose

To manage and deliver high quality expert technical services and support the Anatomy Facility, including teaching laboratories, dissection rooms, Clinical Anatomy Skills Centre (CASC) and mortuary. Responsible for day to day running of the labs, including equipment, specimen and donor management, procurement and health and safety. Interpret complex problems from staff and students and deliver innovative solutions using expert skills and in-depth knowledge. Overseeing practical skills labs and workshops for students, primarily within histology labs. The post holder will also be responsible for overseeing Health & Safety across the school, ensuring policy and procedures are in line with relevant legislation and providing guidance and advice.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1.     Responsible for the preparation and care of anatomical bequests, including the initial examination, cataloguing and evaluation. To ensure the implementation of protocols, in line with the Anatomy Act. Prepare specimens using specialist techniques such as embalming and latex injections.

2.     Responsible for procurement related to teaching labs and mortuary. This includes leading on the procurement of any new teaching resources (specimens).

3.     Responsible for specimen management (including potted and prosections). This includes, but is not limited to, cataloguing, managing requests and maintenance of samples. Use expert knowledge to develop new uses of historical samples to meet teaching and research requirements. Ensure all planned activity has access to required specimens and audit / report any changes in demand.

4.     Plan, prepare and manage teaching labs (primarily histology) and provide specialist technical expertise to service users. Supervise and provide advanced training and support to service users using complex technical resources and/or implementing specialist techniques.

5.     Contribute to the acquisition, set up, and maintenance of equipment/systems and the design of analysis strategies, in line with teaching objectives. This includes acting as the technical lead on the acquisition and implementation of a new cataloguing system. As necessary, carry out complex data analysis of a range of data, supporting service users to do the same, and identifying trends, problems and anomalies. Present findings clearly.

6.     Be responsible for the day-to-day management of and compliance with relevant Health and Safety and/or other specialist legal requirements within the Anatomy facility. Maintain all necessary records in accordance with set requirements, keep up to date with developments or legal changes relevant to the work of the department and advise and train group members as appropriate.

7.     Act as Deputy Lead for School of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing H&S, supporting the Chief Technician. This School level role will include, but is not limited to, conducting internal H&S inspections, writing / reviewing documentation and providing advice / guidance (related to any area of H&S). The post holder will be required to be an active member of the School H&S Committee.

8.     Act as the technical lead on 3D scanning and printing activities to develop new teaching resources aligned with the Department teaching strategies.

9.     Troubleshoot complex technical issues and provide expert technical guidance to suggest, implement and evaluate improvements to Standard Operating Protocols. Diagnose and rectify faults/problems with specialised equipment, working to safe, professional standards. Take a lead role managing this activity within the histology labs.

10.   Support activity within the CASC facility. This includes guiding, troubleshooting and acting as the lead technician on selected courses.

11.   Where appropriate, train staff and students on lab protocols and techniques as required. This will include, but is not limited to, histology, mortuary techniques and 3D printing.

12.   Monitor standards and technical developments in the relevant discipline/specialism and continue to expand knowledge and skills base through appropriate and tailored CPD.

13.   To attend and contribute specialist technical input to laboratory and departmental meetings with the aim of improving service users’ experience and providing a modern facility appropriate to teaching objectives.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills & Experience

 

Knowledge & Qualifications

Essential:

A1 Scottish Credit or Qualification Framework 8 or equivalent and experience of personal development in a similar role or Ability to demonstrate the competencies required having acquired the knowledge and experience in a similar role.

A2 Demonstrable anatomical knowledge.

A3 Up to date knowledge of relevant legislative requirements applicable to the role, including but not limited to Health and Safety and the Anatomy Act Scotland 2006.

A4 Demonstrable specialist technical knowledge aligned to the specified discipline including knowledge of specialist equipment/systems/techniques. Significant breadth or depth of technical knowledge and recognised as an expert in the relevant discipline. Details of the discipline are as described in the post-specific information and advert.

 

Desirable:

B1 BSc (Hons) in Anatomy or similar subject.

 

Skills

Essential:

C1 Significant IT skills, including proficient user of relevant specialist or bespoke software packages.

C2 Significant analytical and problem-solving capability, including high degree of accuracy and attention to detail when dealing with complex data.

C3 Excellent teamworking skills and supervisory skills.

C4 Proven interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to understand, conceptualise and interpret technical requirements of a range of service users with varying degrees of ability and adapt own style to meet the needs of others.

C5 Ability to plan and prioritise work of self and others, along with allocation of resources, to meet the needs of service users.

C6 Demonstrable specialist technical skills in embalming and preparation of anatomical bequest specimens.

 

Experience

Essential:

E1 Significant experience of working within a mortuary and an anatomy facility.

E2 Significant technical experience and knowledge of histology techniques.

E3 Significant relevant experience of providing high quality technical services in a complex environment.

E4 Experience of establishing and managing Standing Operating Procedures and relevant Health and Safety policies and procedures.

E5 Proven experience of managing competing demands in a fast-paced technical service environment.

E6 Experience working with external parties and professional bodies.

 

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 6, £33,951 - £37,694 per annum.
