Job Purpose

To provide in-depth technical expertise in Streptomyces, and provide advice on the creation, set up and best operation of technical resources to aid the delivery of research objectives. In addition, the postholder will undertake a range of technical support activities in line with the School strategy.

 

This post is based within the School of Infection and Immunity, working under the supervision of Dr Rebecca McHugh (Principal Investigator) whose main research focus is the discovery of novel antimicrobial compounds produced by Streptomyces bacteria.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

 

1.      Provide in-depth technical knowledge, support, solutions, and advice to academic and student service users within the specified discipline or assigned research project to maximise the learning experience and/or contribute to the delivery of research objectives.

2.      Contribute to the overall smooth and efficient running of the lab to ensure an excellent experience for service users.

3.      Develop, create and test new equipment, systems, procedures, protocols, models and/or techniques. Diagnose faults and troubleshoot day-to-day problems carrying out appropriate maintenance as required.

4.      Design, plan and organise technical activities to meet the needs of service users within agreed timescales.

5.      Advise, train and provide guidance to service users in the best application and operation of technical resources.

6.      In liaison with relevant senior staff, monitor technical standards, advise, implement and evaluate improvements to existing protocols as required.

7.      Collect, analyse and interpret data using standard procedures and ensure that accurate records are kept, and databases are updated accordingly. Present findings accurately. This may include research and/or teaching related data.

8.      Where relevant, maintain appropriate stock levels, including appropriate preparation of specialised media and samples as required, and purchase consumables and supplies within defined budget.

9.      Where relevant, and in consultation with relevant senior staff, ensure the safe and efficient functioning of the technical workspace and facilities, implementing health and safety policies as determined by the University and the Health and Safety Executive. Support the completion of risk assessments.

10.   Where relevant supervise staff including allocating work and monitoring progress and outputs.

11.   Collaborate with colleagues and participate in team meetings/discussions and contribute to the wider College/Institute/School activities as required, including the Technician Commitment key themes, https://www.gla.ac.uk/myglasgow/staff/technicians/

The above duties are not exhaustive, and the post-holder will be required to undertake any other relevant duties as required by the PI/line manager which are commensurate with the grade of the post.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills, and Experience  

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential:

A1. Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 7 [Advanced Higher / Scottish vocational Qualification level 3, Higher National Certificate] or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role.

A2. Detailed technical knowledge of Bacterial culture, antimicrobial testing and DNA/RNA/metabolite  extraction

A3. Up to date knowledge of relevant laboratory Health and Safety legislation.

 

Desirable:

B1. Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework level 9 (BSc Degree, SVQ Level 4) or equivalent in relevant scientific discipline.

B2. Knowledge of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion policy.

 

Skills

Essential:

C1. Demonstrable in-depth technical knowledge and skills aligned to the specified discipline or assigned research project.

C2. Significant IT skills including familiarity with Microsoft Office programmes and relevant databases.

C3. Demonstrable analytical and problem-solving abilities, including high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.

C4. Proven interpersonal and communication skills.

C5. Numeracy and literacy skills.

C6. A high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

C7. Excellent organisational and time management skills and an ability to prioritise workload to meet competing demands.

C8. Use of initiative and judgement to resolve problems independently.

C9. Ability to work individually and as part of a team.

 

Desirable:

D1. Molecular biology techniques.

D2. Skills in plasmid construction, transformation, conjugation, and CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing.

 

Experience

Essential:

E1. Significant relevant work experience in a research laboratory.

E2. Experience and competence in Streptomyces culture

E3. Experience in bacteriology laboratory.

E4. Experience of understanding and interpreting the technical requirements of staff and students.

 

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 5, £28,031 - £31,236 per annum.

 

This post is full time and fixed term for up to 6 months up until 1st November 2026.
