Job Purpose

A Technician position is available in the laboratory of Matthias Marti at the Centre for Parasitology, University of Glasgow. You will have the responsibility to manage technical aspects of the research on behalf of the Principal Investigator. Specifically, the postholder will support research staff in the development of tools to investigate malaria parasite biology.  In addition, the postholder will undertake a range of technical support activities in line with the College/School/Group Strategy.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

 

1. To provide the management of and specialist technical training to all staff members within the laboratory. This will include the training of staff on the use of specialised equipment, the preparation and execution of SOPs and protocols.

2. To execute technical aspects of research, analyse data and prepare for publication on a varied range of research themes and projects. This will include scientific input to collaborations within the group, within the department and with colleagues internationally.

3. To train colleagues and students in parasite culturing.

4. To be responsible for all managerial aspects of the laboratory including technical training on the use and maintenance of equipment, training and implementation of health and safety legislation in accordance with University and EU directives, and support the PI in the upkeep of COSHH and GM risk assessments.

5. To prepare, maintain and amend accordingly the Home Office ASPA project licence. The licence should be reviewed routinely for expansion of protocols in accordance with the needs of the group and all proposed amendments should meet with the University’s ERP (Ethical Review Process).

6. To assist in the budgetary maintenance of all grants awarded to the PI, provide projected costs for the preparation of future grant applications.

7. Keep records of all experimental procedures and prepare to publication standard, all results. Findings will be presented to the research group at routine intervals and data used in posters and presentations at both a national and international level thus contributing to the Institute, College and University’s status as a world leader in research.

8. Perform literature searches to keep up to date with advancing technologies and research in the relevant fields and to address technical issues as faced within the group.

9. To provide maintenance of all laboratory databases including but not limited to custom made antibodies, cryo-preserved stable parasite lines and annual statistical returns to the Home Office.

10. To take an active role in the Health and Safety legislation. This will involve regular liaison with the building manager and incorporation of new guidelines and directives.

11. To act as liaison officer to all sections of MVLS support, including accounts, stores, bioelectronics, and biological services. To meet with external sales representatives to ensure the most cost effective, yet technically superior purchases are made for equipment and maintenance services for the research group. To initiate and implement positive change to the laboratory environment with regards collaboration and collegiality with other research groups.

12. To prepare and maintain stock reagents, parasite culture, lab consumables, etc. for the research group.

13. Coordinate and perform activities associated with shipping and receiving in accordance with proper IATA standard.

14. Work collaboratively with others, including within the wider College/Institute/School and where relevant with external contacts, to enhance the delivery of the research aims and support the broader strategic aims of the University. Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

 

Qualifications/Knowledge

Essential

A1. Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 8 [Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4, Higher National Diploma] or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role.

A2. Detailed technical knowledge and expertise in relevant discipline.

A3. Up to date knowledge of relevant legislative requirements applicable to the role, including by not limited to Health and Safety.

 

Desirable

B1. MSc Degree or equivalent in relevant discipline.

B2. Working technical knowledge of maintenance and troubleshooting of Flow cytometry equipment, notably BD A1 Symphony and MACSquant VYB.

 

Skills

Essential

C1. Proven skills in laboratory management

C2. Technical and documentation skills for the performance, analysis and collation of scientific data.

C3. Organisation and project management skills, ability to carry a project from conception to completion.

C4. Proven interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to understand, conceptualise, and interpret technical requirements of a research group and adapt own style to meet the needs of others.

C5. Ability to work creatively both independently, with initiative and as part of a team with internal and external colleagues.

C6. Ability to learn and adapt to rapidly changing protocols and technologies and to implement new methodologies at a supervisory level.

C7. Self-motivation, ability to deliver results to timescales and flexibility in approach to priorities.

 

Desirable

D1. Proficiency in Flow cytometry analysis software FlowJo.

D2. Strong presentation skills, with experience in presenting research data at conferences/internal meetings.

D3. Proficiency in Microsoft office suite and in DNA analysis software.

 

Experience

Essential

E1. Significant relevant work experience within a similar environment, including evidence of previous professional development.

E2. Experience of molecular and cellular biology

E3. Cell culture techniques

E4. Experience of microscopy and imaging

E5. Experience of understanding and interpreting the technical requirements of service users and implementing appropriate methods of achieving their needs.

E6. Experience of planning and organising own workload to meet the needs of service users.

 

Desirable

F1. Experience of working in a CL3 laboratory.

F2. Experience with flow cytometry

F3. Experience of P. falciparumin vitro culture

F4. Experience in training other members of staff in the safe use of laboratory equipment.

F5. Experience in arranging shipments of biological samples within and outside of Europe

F7. Experience in ordering reagents/consumables and maintaining lab stock levels.

F8. Experience of operating independently in progressing and delivering research goals within set timescales.

 

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 6, £33,951 - £37,694 per annum.

 

This post is full time and fixed term until 30th June 2026.
