Job description

Job Purpose

To provide high quality technical support in biological sample analyses; collating and reporting manual and automated assay results from large-scale epidemiological and clinical studies. To support the smooth and efficient day-to-day running of the Metabolic Medicine biomarker lab and also provide molecular technical support to various research groups within the School. In addition, the post holder will undertake a range of technical support activities in line with the College /School Strategy.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Provide in-depth technical support to academic and student service users within the specified discipline or assigned research project. Contribute to the overall smooth and efficient running of the lab to ensure an excellent experience for service users.

2. Responsible for conducting manual (ELISA) and automated assays on stored blood samples to a high standard as directed by line manager.

3. Reception, logging and storing of all incoming samples for epidemiological/clinical studies, prior to assaying. Preparation of all outgoing samples, ensuring packing is adequate to maintain viability of samples and labelling is appropriate for transport of biological materials.

4. Collect, analyse and interpret data using standard procedures and ensure that accurate records are kept (both electronic and hard copies) and databases are updated accordingly including freezer inventories. Present findings accurately. This may include research and/or teaching related data.

5. Responsible for maintaining lab equipment including maintenance of analysers and equipment, and monitoring freezer performance and reporting defects for repair.

6. Recommend replacement of specific types of equipment. Calibration of lab apparatus as appropriate, e.g. pipettes, dispensers and automated analysers.

7. To contribute to the safe and well-organised functioning of the laboratories in terms of Health & Safety. This includes, but is not limited to, supporting the completion of risk assessments and COSHH assessments, ensuring that all Health and Safety paperwork is completed timeously and recorded accurately, and implementing and adhering to all applicable health and safety policies, including specialist legal procedures for certain materials.

8. Where relevant, maintain appropriate stock levels, including appropriate preparation of specialised media and samples as required, and purchase consumables and supplies within defined budget. Ensure safe implementation and ongoing storage of potentially hazardous materials

9. To work with a flexible outlook as part of a dynamic team to ensure workload commitments are met.

10. Collaborate with colleagues and participate in team meetings/discussions and contribute to the wider College/Institute/School activities as required To provide technical advice and guidance to staff and students.

11. To provide technical advice and guidance to staff and students. The above duties are not exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake any other relevant duties as required by the PI/line manager which are commensurate with the grade of the post.

 

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

 

Knowledge/Qualifications

 

Essential:

A1. Scottish Credit & Qualification Framework Level 5 or 6 (National 5 or 6, Scottish VQ   2/3, or equivalent) in biological science subjects.

A2. Knowledge of health and safety practices of working in a laboratory environment with potentially infectious materials.

A3. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office package including Word and Excel and adaptable IT skills to use specialist software packages.

A4. Understanding of relevant policies and procedures relative to the role, and the quality standards and outputs required.

 

Desirable:

B1. Scottish Credit & Qualification Framework Level 6 or 7 (Scottish Highers, HNC, or equivalent) in a biological science subject.

B2. Working towards Professional Registration with the Institute of Science & Technology to RSci Tech level, or above.

 

Skills

 

Essential:

C1. Skilled in handling basic laboratory equipment - particularly pipettes.

C2. Strong IT skills including the potential use of bespoke and specialist software programmes

C3. Good interpersonal and communication skills, including ability to relay and understand technical information.

C4. Excellent organisational skills and ability to plan and prioritise workdays and weeks ahead, and to respond to changing pressures or requirements.

C5. Ability to use initiative and judgement to resolve problems.

C6. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

C7. Accuracy and attention to detail.

C8. Ability to maintain accurate and complete laboratory records.

 

Desirable:

D1. Skills in working with and maintaining routine biochemistry automated analysers (e.g. Roche Cobas units, Abbott Architects etc.).

D2. Technical knowledge and skills in molecular biology techniques and cell culture.

 

Experience

 

Essential:

E1. Demonstrable experience in a similar technical role, with similar responsibilities…

 

Desirable:

F1. Experience of working with and managing large human blood sample biobanks.

F2. Experience of working in a clinical biochemistry laboratory and more specifically the use of biochemistry automated analysers.

F3. Experience of understanding and interpreting the technical requirements of service users and implementing appropriate methods of achieving the needs of staff and students.

F4. Previous experience in performing commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays

 

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 4, £23,581 - £26,038 per annum.
