Job Purpose
To manage and deliver high quality expert technical services for veterinary clinical skills & anatomy teaching including providing specialist technical expertise in the relevant discipline. Responsible for the organisation and efficient usage of teaching lab space including day-to-day running of the teaching laboratories, including equipment, apparatus and consumables, relevant safety regulations and day-to-day management of specialist facilities and technical support staff. Interpret complex problems from staff and students and deliver innovative solutions using expert skills and in-depth knowledge. In addition, the postholder may be responsible for overseeing practical skills labs and workshops for students.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Plan, prepare and manage teaching labs and provide specialist technical expertise to service users. Supervise and provide advanced training and support to service users using complex technical resources and/or implementing specialist techniques.
2. Manage the resources within teaching labs including management of technical support staff, delegated budgets, lab space, specimen inventory and equipment/systems. Ensure operational delivery of technical resources is optimised and seek to continuously improve the technical service.
3. Responsible for the design, development and construction of relevant technical resources for use in teaching labs, ensuring exceptional standards of finish and accuracy, within defined timescales to meet teaching objectives. Advise and decide on what techniques can be best used to meet teaching objectives.
4. Contribute to the acquisition, set up, and maintenance of equipment/systems in line with teaching objectives. Supporting service users to do the same, and identifying trends, problems and anomalies. Manage the resources within the teaching facilities including lab space and equipment/systems. Ensure operational delivery of technical resources is optimised and seek to continuously improve the technical service. Liaise with suppliers to ensure best quality and value for money consumables are obtained and adequate stock supplies are maintained.
5. Troubleshoot complex technical issues and provide expert technical guidance to suggest, implement and evaluate improvements to Standard Operating Protocols. Diagnose and rectify faults/problems with specialised equipment, working to safe, professional standards.
6. Monitor standards and technical developments in the relevant discipline/specialism and continue to expand knowledge and skills base through appropriate and tailored CPD.
7. Where relevant, support a range of teaching support administration and work closely with academic staff to define a strategy to deliver a learning outcome.
8. Responsible for all legal, Health and Safety and other necessary requirements associated with running the labs including appropriate awareness and implementation of University policies. This includes risk assessments for all relevant equipment, teaching materials and consumables; the application of safe practices and procedures in laboratories and preparation areas to be followed by staff and students; the safe handling and storage of all fresh (ensuring acquisition and handling of material meets ethical approval regulations) and embalmed materials; the safe storage, handling, use and disposal of embalming fluid, in particular formaldehyde solution and joint responsibility for the regular monitoring of formaldehyde levels within both the teaching and preparation areas and the safe disposal of all laboratory waste teaching materials.
9. To attend and contribute specialist technical input to laboratory meetings with the aim of improving service users’ experience and providing a modern facility appropriate to teaching objectives.

Teaching:
11. Provide in-depth technical support to academic and students within Clinical Skills
& Anatomy.
12 Plan, co-ordinate and implement practical classes for the BVMS and BSc Vet Bioscience courses as required. This includes timetabling staff, ensuring live and cadaver animal resources (adhering to local policy and animal welfare guidelines), preparing and maintaining specimens for teaching, preparing registers, sourcing, and setting up of equipment.
13. Deliver teaching and assessment of clinical skills and anatomy as required.
14. Where relevant, responsible for a range of teaching support administration. This may include recording student attendance and collating student assessment marks for feedback to the academic lead.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential
A1. Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 8 (Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4, Higher National Diploma) or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role.
Desirable
B1. BSc degree or equivalent in a relevant biological science discipline.
B2. Knowledge of the University systems
B3. IOSH, NEBOSH or equivalent qualification.
B4. Experience of transportation of fresh cadavers and materials from suppliers.

Essential
C1. Demonstrable specialist technical skills aligned to the specified discipline including skills in specialist equipment/systems/techniques. Significant breadth or depth of technical knowledge and recognised as an expert in the relevant discipline e.g. detailed technical and skilled knowledge of veterinary clinical skills and animal cadaver dissection techniques on gross anatomical specimens, including embalming and plastination.
C2. Excellent skills in operating specialist equipment/techniques.
C3. Up to date knowledge of relevant legislative requirements applicable to the role, including but not limited to Health and Safety.
C4. Significant IT skills, including proficient user of relevant specialist or bespoke software packages.
C5. Significant analytical and problem-solving capability, including high degree of accuracy and attention to detail when dealing with complex data.
C6. Excellent teamworking skills and line management experience.
C7. Proven interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to understand, conceptualise and interpret technical requirements of a range of service users with varying degrees of ability and adapt own style to meet the needs of others.
C8. Ability to plan and prioritise work of self and others, along with allocation of resources, to meet the needs of service users.
C9. An ability to effectively teach, enthuse and assess veterinary undergraduates in veterinary anatomy and clinical skills.
Desirable
D1. Practical experience of and expertise in the use of band saw and other equipment in
preparing large, frozen and long bone specimens.
Experience
Essential
E1. Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties
associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and
skills in a similar role.
E2. Experience of working with a range of technical service users, with varying degrees of ability, ensuring their experience is optimal.
E3. Experience of establishing and managing Standing Operating Procedures and relevant Health and Safety policies and procedures, including biosecurity of teaching premises and safe handling of fresh and embalmed cadaveric material
E4. Proven experience of managing competing demands in a fast-paced technical service environment.
E5. Experience of teaching in some capacity.
E6. Experience in the co-ordination and delivery of a range of animal handling/husbandry, comparative anatomy and/or clinical skills teaching.
E7. Must have a valid full UK driving licence, manual test passed and held for minimum of 2 years and over the age of 21. (For the purposes of complying with university insurance requirements, candidates are required to have held their driving licence for a minimum of 2 years and be over the age of 21).
Desirable
F1. Experience of working in a higher or further education setting.

Salary will be Grade 6, £33,951 - £37,694 per annum.
