Job Purpose

Responsible for academic management and coordination of all short courses in Psychology, Counselling Skills and Science related subjects included in the UofG’s open learning offering. Work alongside the Widening Participation Team to support the delivery of Maths and Science-related Access Programmes.

 

Line manager for part-time tutors who have responsibility for teaching all courses. Responsible for ensuring the courses operate on a successful commercial basis and provide a high-quality educational experience.

 

Main Duties & Responsibilities

1. Responsible for the line management of part-time tutors to ensure timely delivery of all courses (and associated programmes). Liaising with the local Business Support and UofG People and Organisational Development colleagues to oversee all aspects of human resources management, including recruitment, induction, timesheet approval, performance management, management of attendance and personal development.

2. Liaising regularly with tutors to ensure teaching and new course development is delivered in line with UofG academic policies, standards and governance.

3. Working with the Director of Business Support, monitor the return on investment for all open learning short courses. Actively exploring opportunities to support local income targets, particularly in support of Study Abroad Partnerships

4. Responsible for the design and development of effective assessment and student feedback processes. Including the preparation of assessment materials and samples of students’ work for External Examiners. Compiling data on students’ performance and attendance for Boards of Examiners.

5. Ensure the implantation all academic governance policies in relation to in relation Extenuating Circumstances, academic practice

6. In line with University academic policy and governance, undertake academic moderation of student assignments for credit bearing courses, ensuring rigorous quality and the achievement of expected academic standards.

7. Ensure effective development, monitoring and evaluation of courses in line with the University’s policies and processes. This includes preparing course and programme approval documentation, undertaking annual course monitoring and any other annual or periodic quality assurance and quality enhancement activities to enhance the student learning experience.

8. Working with the External Relations Marketing Communications Team, develop profile raising activities for the subject area, maximising return on investment.

9. Support the University’s strategic ambitions in relation to engagement, in line with the University’s Strategic Plan.

10. Attend internal and external meetings and events as required. Undertake any other duties as assigned by the Director of Business Support.

 

Knowledge/Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential:

A1 Either: ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar or number of different roles. Or, Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework Level 9 (Ordinary Degree, Scottish Vocational Qualification Level 4), or equivalent (including professional accreditation with relevant formal training) and experience of personal development in a similar role(s).

A2 Significant knowledge and understanding of the subject area and of course development, organisation and management to deliver successful courses in further and/or higher education.

A3 Commercially aware and knowledge of delivering income-generating activities in line with financial KPIs.

A4 Up to date knowledge of the UK and/or Scotland Widening Participation, Lifelong Learning and Adult Learning sector.

A5 Sound understanding of the learning skills required for study in Higher Education (HE).

A6 Knowledge of the higher education learning environment, academic cycle and funding mechanisms.

A7 Knowledge and understanding of the needs of the non-traditional learners and those with additional support needs.

A8 Working knowledge of sectorial guidance in relation to academic practice.

 

Desirable:

B1 Professional teaching qualification or working towards one.

B2 Understanding of University Equality & Diversity and Safeguarding policies and procedures.

Experience 

Essential

E1 Experience of the design, organisation and management of teaching programmes is the relevant subject(s).

E2 Experience of planning and progressing work activities within academic and professional guidelines or organisational policy, applying initiative and independent judgement.

E3 Experience of people management including management of performance.

E4 Experience of teaching and assessment in a relevant subject area.

E5 Experience of working in the HE, Widening Participation and/or Lifelong Learning sector.

E7 Experience of developing and conducting training sessions.

E8 Experience of developing learning resources.

E9 Experience of evaluating provision to produce service improvement.

 

Desirable: 

F1 Evidence of course development.

F2 Evidence of community engagement, partner collaboration and positive outcome delivery.

F3 Up to date experience of widening participation programmes in Scotland.

 

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 7, £41,064 - £46,049 per annum pro rata.

 

This post is part time (17.5 hours per week) and fixed term for up to 12 months from start date.

 

Please Note: The University would consider a secondment opportunity for this post. Applicants should seek clearance for release for secondment from their line manager before making a formal application.
