Job Purpose

To deliver an efficient and effective diagnostic pathology service, enhance and develop undergraduate teaching and postgraduate training and to undertake high quality clinical research, within this service. To thereby contribute to the College of Medical, Veterinary & Life Sciences objectives relevant to national and international excellence in clinical service, teaching and research.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical: 

1.To make a significant contribution to the delivery of the Pathology service (biopsy and post-mortem examinations, within Veterinary Diagnostic Services) by providing a high quality service as detailed in Client Service Agreements, and offering appropriate advice to veterinary surgeons, veterinary nurses and veterinary students in the University of Glasgow and to external referring practices and research clients, that will consequently maintain a clinical diagnostic workload necessary to support the commercial, teaching and research activities of the School. Adhering strictly to the required timescales and deadlines associated with the aforementioned duties.

2. To assist in ensuring that adequate cover is available for the provision of advice and expertise.

3. To be proactive in the development of novel diagnostic approaches and techniques to aid diagnosis and treatment and exploit the opportunities to enhance the income generation capability of the service.

4. To maximise opportunities available for continued personal training and development.

5. To support the planning, organisation and delivery of training requirements of postgraduate students (pathology residents), with a view to their successful completion of appropriate examinations.

Teaching:

6. Make a substantial contribution to delivering a range of teaching, supervision and assessment activities, in the field of anatomic pathology, across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes within the School/College.

7. Carry out course administration within required timescales ensuring effective communication of information, in particular, assessment requirements and criteria and timely and constructive feedback on assessment.

8. Have significant involvement with the on-going development and design of pathology aspects of the BVMS and Veterinary Bioscience curricula, in a manner that supports a research-led approach to student learning.

9. To support the development of creative and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, in accordance with the University’s Quality Enhancement Strategy, so that the educational opportunities available to students are maintained or improved.

10. To actively contribute to the training programme for the Pathology Residents and their preparation for appropriate examinations (ACVP, ECVP, FRCPath).

11. To provide scholarship and mentorship to junior staff associated with the diagnostic services and assist with the identification, planning, organisation and delivery of training requirements by supervision of clinical duties and research projects.

12. To ensure Clinical Quality assurance standards are implemented, adhered to, and reviewed constantly.

Clinical Research:

13. To collaborate in clinical/diagnostic investigations and evidence-based medicine developing an external reputation and a consistent significant output of publications in high quality refereed clinical/veterinary pathology journals and/or textbooks.

14. To attend and participate in national/international events/research seminars/conferences relevant to the service area.

15. To actively seek external funding required to under-pin the long-term growth of the activity.

16. Develop a growing portfolio of research outputs and activities.

17. Contribute to external funding applications required to under-pin the long-term growth of the field of diagnostic pathology.

Administration: 

18. To contribute to the administrative work of Veterinary Diagnostic Services as assigned by the Academic Head of Anatomic Pathology/Head of Division/Head of School. 

19. To contribute to the Performance & Development Review process as appropriate and in accordance with University’s strategy and to participate in other administrative processes relating to the management of residents and technical staff in the anatomic pathology unit.

Engagement:

20. To participate in promotional activities and events related to the Veterinary Diagnostic Services Unit.

21. To develop new ideas and participate in the delivery of continuing professional development (CPD) for practitioners or researchers in the UK and overseas.

22. To contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the Strategic Plan, World Changers Together.

For appointment at Grade 9:

23. The post holder would be expected to demonstrate significant leadership in pathology by undertaking and developing clinical services and participating in national/international, high quality clinical scholarships and research-led education, contributing to academic development in the School through clinical scholarship, training and teaching, and contributing at national level through external association.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential:

A1 Veterinary degree registerable with the RCVS.

A2 A specialist post graduate veterinary anatomic pathology qualification (eg FRCPath, Diploma of the American or European College of Veterinary Pathologists).

For appointment at Grade 9:

A3 A specialist post graduate veterinary anatomic pathology qualification (eg FRCPath, Diploma of the American or European College of Veterinary Pathologists), a postgraduate research qualification (PhD) and at least 2 years post-boards experience in a related role.

Desirable:

B1 A good track record of development and delivery of teaching.

B2 Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.

Skills

Essential:

C1 Expertise across the field corresponding to training and qualifications, and the ability to provide expert advice to internal and external clinicians and researchers.

C2 Excellent communication skills both orally and written.

C3 Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills.

C4 Time/project/people/budget management skills as appropriate.

C5 Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

C6 Self-motivated, able to multitask, plan for contingencies and think strategically.

C7 Understanding and experience of databases and other IT applications/packages.

C8 Recent and proven experience of trimming and reading biopsies.

For appointment at Grade 9:

C9 Proven leadership and motivational ability in teaching and the ability to actively lead clinical teams and adhere to specific timelines, as appropriate.

C10 Excellent and demonstrable ability to keep to multiple concurrent deadlines in all aspects of the position (case reporting, teaching, examination setting and marking, and all divisional, School and College administrative duties).

Experience

Essential:

E1 Participation in a veterinary pathology diagnostic service.

E2 Evidence of conducting and publishing clinical research.

E3 Evidence of involvement in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

For Appointment at Grade 9:

E4 Extensive experience in diagnostic pathology.

E5 Teaching experience relevant to the HE sector.

E6 A track record of clinical research publications.

E7 An established reputation as an advanced clinician in the speciality. An established reputation in clinical research and a major contributor to the discipline.

E8 Successful supervision /career development of post-graduate students studying for clinical diplomas.

E9 Record of award of competitive grant funding for clinical research.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 8/9, £50,253 - £58,225/£59,966 - £67,468 per annum.
