Job Purpose

 

To make a leading contribution to the project ‘Identifying drivers of schistosomiasis treatment failure and recommendations for treatment strategies (DRIVERS)’ working with Professor Poppy Lamberton, specifically leading the research into identifying community level factors which are driving maintained transmission. The successful candidate will be required to make a leading contribution to the formulation and submission of research publications and research proposals as well as make a significant contribution to the management and direction of this complex and challenging project as opportunities allow and planning and applying for multinational intervention trial applications towards the end of the project .

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

 

1.        Play a leading role in the management and development of the project and to work independently and in collaboration to bring the project to a successful completion including establishing and maintaining external collaborations both nationally and internationally.

2.        Play a leading role in the planning, design and conduct of research, individually or jointly, in accordance with the project deliverables and project/Institute/College/University research strategy.

3.        Establish and maintain an extensive research profile and reputation and that of the University of Glasgow/ School/ Research Group, sustaining a track record of independent and joint publications of international quality in high profile/quality refereed publications, enhancing the research impact in terms of economic/societal benefit, and gathering indicators of esteem.

4.        Play a leading role in the presentation of research findings at high profile national and international conferences, seminars and meetings to enhance the research profile of the project/Institute/College/University.

5.        Lead the development, both independently and in collaboration with others (including stakeholders) of the identification of potential funding sources and lead in the development of proposals to secure funding from internal and external bodies to support future research of international quality.

6.        Take a leading role in developing and maintaining collaborations with colleagues across the project and in the broader Institute/College/University and wider community (e.g. academic and other collaborators/partners).

7.        Play a leading role in the organisation, supervision, mentoring and training of undergraduate and/or postgraduate students and less experienced members of the project team to ensure their effective development.

8.        Perform administrative tasks related to the activities of the research group and School, including Budgets/Expenditure/Ethics/Nagoya Protocols/MTAs.

9.        Supervise Masters students and act as co-supervisor to PhD students as assigned by the Director of Institute and/or senior group leader.

10.    Perform administrative tasks related to the activities of the project and Institute, including budgets/expenditure.

11.    Keep up to date with current knowledge and recent advances in the field/discipline in order to provide advice and guidance to students and less experienced colleagues.

12.    Engage in personal, professional and career development, to enhance both specialist and transferable skills in accordance with desired career trajectory.

13.    Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School/Director of Research Institute.

14.    Contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University Strategy, World Changing Glasgow 2025.

 

Knowledge, Qualifications Skills and Experience

 

Qualifications

Essential:

A1 Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework level 12 (PhD) or equivalent in a relevant subject area.

 

Knowledge, Skills 

Essential:

C1 A comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of current issues and future directions within the wider subject area or subject specialism.

C2 Specialist theoretical and practical knowledge in areas relevant to the field of research.

C3 Knowledge of project-specific technical models, equipment or techniques.

C4 An established track record of presentation and publication of research results in quality publications and/or at conferences.

 

Experience

Essential: 

E1 Sufficient depth of relevant research experience, normally including sufficient postdoctoral experience in a related field, appropriate to an early career researcher.

E2 Substantial, relevant research experience in a related field.

E3 Experience of delivering quality outputs in a timely and efficient manner.

E4 An established national/international profile.

E5 Experience of making a leading contribution in academic activities.

E6 Experience of independence as illustrated by identification of project objectives from assessment of literature, design and analysis of research data and drafting of papers.

E7 Commitment to open research, as appropriate to the discipline, through open data, open code, open educational resources and practices that support replication.

E8 Proven commitment to supporting career development of colleagues and to other forms of collegiality appropriate to the career stage.

E8 Experience in planning, budgeting and running field experiments in Schistosoma endemic settings.

E9 Experience in malacology and parasite population genetics research.

E10 Experience of working with partners in sub-Saharan Africa.

E11 Experience of writing / co-writing and budgeting major multinational grant applications.

E12 Substantial experience in training of multidisciplinary NTD field teams.

E13 Experience in genetic material preparation for downstream analysis (microsatellites, DNA sequencing, and Whole Genome Sequencing)

E14 Experience in biobanking and sample tracking, quality control and long term storage.

E15 Experience in navigating Nagoya protocol for non-human genetic resources, human/animal ethical approval and human tissue act.
