Job Purpose

 

The PDRA will play a key role applying data science to support and drive new research studies to deliver the Pontecorvo Chair objectives. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the formulation and submission of research publications and research proposals as well as help manage and direct this complex and challenging project as opportunities allow.  Furthermore, the PDRA will be encouraged to secure substantial grant funding to fuel research endeavours, produce high-impact publications and drive the dissemination of research findings across reputable scientific journals, solidifying SCMH's reputation as a leader in the pharmacogenomics landscape.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

 

1.      Develop and progress individual/joint research projects of international standard in the subject area with the support of a mentor, as required.

 

2.      Write up research findings/outcomes for publication in leading journals for dissemination as appropriate, identifying potential sources and contributing to funding applications as an individual or team member.

 

3.      Contribute fully to developing and enhancing the research profile of the School/College, including establishing a track record of high-quality publications.

 

4.      To contribute to grant funding applications as data science or statistical co-investigator, leading on their development from initial contact through to submission, to secure funding which makes a significant contribution to the Institute/College/University.

 

5.      Where relevant, to deliver teaching courses and contribute to the creation of associated materials. Act as a co-supervisor for postgraduate research students as required.

 

6.      To manage project timelines, in collaboration with senior staff.

 

7.      To contribute to the administrative management of the relevant research area

 

8.      To advise and give direction to staff within other functional areas of the Institute/College/University.

 

9.      Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Director of Institute/Head of School.

 

10. To contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, World Changers  Together

 

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

 

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential:

A1 Normally Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) plus track record of emerging independence within a research/professional environment, or alternatively possess professional qualifications and experience equivalent to PhD level plus the requisite experience.

A2 Sufficient breadth and/or depth of knowledge in the specialist subject/discipline and of teaching methods and techniques to work within the subject area.

 

Skills

Essential:

C1 Ability to communicate material of a specialist or highly technical nature and to be effective both orally and in writing at a level appropriate to the activity.

C2 Developing track record of research outputs compatible with enhancing the school’s research profile in accordance with School objectives.

C3 Thorough knowledge and ability to apply policy, practice and procedures including broader University/sector/external (e.g. commercial) awareness.

C4 Ability to work on own initiative to contribute to the research and teaching activities within the subject area and wider School environment.

C5 Effective organisation skills to manage time and prioritise as appropriate research, teaching, and administrative responsibilities.

C6 Proven commitment to supporting the career development of colleagues and to other forms of collegiality appropriate to the career stage.

 

Experience

Essential:

E1 Experience of planning and progressing work activities within professional guidelines or organisational policy, applying initiative and independent judgement.

E2 Well-developed working knowledge of research methods, technical models, equipment and techniques relevant to the project/discipline as outlined in the Job Purpose

E3 Demonstrated commitment to open research, as appropriate to the discipline, through open data, open code, open educational resources, and practices that support replication.

 

Desirable:

F1 Experience of participating in activities that translate research into impact to benefit the economy and wider society

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 7, £41,064 - £46,049 per annum.

 

This post is full-time (35 hours per week) and has funding available until 31 March 2028.
