Job description
Job Purpose
The candidate will contribute to the work of the consortium *Policy Modelling for Health (HealthMod”, 2024-2028) and associated projects, *working with Dr. Andreas Hoehn, Prof. Petra Meier and the wider Systems Science in Public Health team within the Public Health Unit, School of Health and Wellbeing. HealthMod is a large UK-wide research programme which connects scientists, policymakers, and charities interested in using economic policies to improve people's health. Taking a systems science approach, the HealthMod consortium develops public health computational modelling that provides timely and effective support to real-life policy processes.
The successful candidate will become part of an interdisciplinary team and support the development of data and model assets which are used across the HealthMod consortium and associated projects. The candidate will also operate the tools developed to run analyses under supervision and make contributions to the formulation and submission of research publications and research proposals as opportunities arise throughout an interdisciplinary and often co-produced research process. Main Duties and Responsibilities
Perform the following activities in conjunction with and under the guidance of the Principal/Co Investigator:
1. Contribute as part of an interdisciplinary team to the creation, quality control, and usage of a novel full-scale digital twin dataset for the UK and related simulation infrastructure.
2. Contribute as part of an interdisciplinary team to the planning and conduct of assigned research individually or jointly in accordance with the project deliverables and project/group/School/College research strategy.
3. Document research output including analysis and interpretation of all data, maintaining records and databases, drafting technical/progress reports and papers as appropriate.
4. Contribute to the identification of potential funding sources and assist in the development of proposals to secure funding from internal and external bodies to support future research and impact.
5. Establish and maintain your research profile and reputation and that of the University of Glasgow/School/Research Group/area, including establishing and sustaining a track record of independent and joint publications of international quality, enhancing the research impact in terms of economic/societal benefit, and gathering indicators of esteem.
6. Survey the research literature and environment, understand the research challenges associated with the project & subject area, and develop/implement a suitable research strategy to deliver project/area requirements and opportunities.
7. Presentation of work at international and national conferences, at internal and external seminars, colloquia and workshops to develop and enhance our research and/or impact profile.
8. Take a leading role in developing and maintaining collaborations with colleagues across the research group/area/School/College/University and wider community (e.g. academic and industrial partners).
9. Take a leading role in team/group meetings/seminars/workshops and School research group/area activities to enhance the wider knowledge, outputs and culture of the School/College.
10. Perform administrative tasks related to the activities of the research group and School, including budgets/expenditure.
11. Keep up to date with current knowledge and recent advances in the field/discipline.
12. Engage in personal, professional and career development, to enhance both specialist and transferable skills in accordance with desired career trajectory.
13. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by your line manager and the Head of School.
14. Contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with University strategy
Qualifications/Knowledge
Essential:
A1. SCQF Level 10 [Honours degree] in a relevant subject area or a cognate discipline, or equivalent.
A2. Knowledge of data processing tasks such as querying, linking, pivoting, and cleaning of datasets.
A3. Knowledge of quantitative data analysis methods (e.g., but not limited to methods of survival analysis, regression models, multistate models, simulation models, life table and decomposition approaches, causal inference, matrix population models).
Desirable:
B1. Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD), or alternatively possess professional qualifications and experience equivalent to PhD level plus the requisite experience.
B2. A comprehensive and up-to-date subject-specific knowledge around contemporary societal challenges and their impact on the social determinants of health and health inequalities.
Skills
Essential:
C1: Skills enabling the processing of complex data (e.g., but not limited to data describing areas, human/animal populations, administrative processes, or the built/natural environment).
C2. Excellent communication skills [oral and written], including public presentations and ability to communicate complex data/concepts clearly and concisely.
C3. Excellent interpersonal skills including working in diverse interdisciplinary teams and a collegiate approach.
C4. Appropriate workload/time/project/budget/people management skills.
C5. Self-motivation, initiative and independent thought/working.
C6. Problem solving skills including a flexible and pragmatic appropriate.
Experience
Essential:
E1: Experience of translating ideas and quantitative problem formulations into data processing tasks and/or quantitative models.
E2: Experience of developing and running statistical and/or programming code to process data and/or answer quantitative research questions (e.g., but not limited to applications written in either R, Python, Julia, Go, Java, or C/C++).
E3: Experience of scientific writing.
E4: Proven ability to deliver quality outputs in a timely and efficient manner.
Desirable:
F1: Experience working with Microsimulation models and/or simulated or synthetic population datasets.
F2: Commitment to open research, as appropriate to the discipline, through open data, open code, open educational resources and practices that support replication.
