Job description
Job Purpose
To make a leading contribution to the project “FLIM-Optiq: Lifetime imaging for cardiac functional assays”- an innovative fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM) system aimed at transforming cardiotoxicity screening in drug development working with Caroline Muellenbroich, Daniele Faccio and Clyde Biosciences Ltd. The successful candidate will be required to make a leading contributions to the innovation, translational research and early-stage commercialization activities. Candidates must have a strong background in photonics, multiphoton microscopy with a track record of the commercialisation of these techniques and make a significant contribution to the management and direction of this complex and challenging project as opportunities allow.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Lead technical development and validation of the prototype and to work independently and in collaboration to bring the project to a successful completion including establishing and maintaining external collaborations both nationally and internationally.
2. Play a leading role in the planning, design and conduct of innovation, individually or jointly, in accordance with the project deliverables and project/Institute/College/University research strategy.
3. Establish and maintain an extensive innovation profile and reputation and that of the University of Glasgow/ School/ Research Group and sustaining a track record of high quality impact outputs, enhancing the research impact in terms of economic/societal benefit, and gathering indicators of esteem.
4. Support intellectual property protection strategies, including invention disclosure, freedom-to-operate assessment, and liaison with technology transfer offices. Contribute to the development of the commercialisation roadmap, including competitor analysis, user validation, and market positioning.
5. Lead the development, both independently and in collaboration with others [including stakeholders] of the identification of potential funding sources and lead in the development of proposals to secure funding from internal and external bodies to support future research of international quality.
6. Take a leading role in developing and maintaining collaborations with colleagues across the project and in the broader Institute/College/University and wider community [e.g. academic and other collaborators/partners].
7. Play a leading role in the organisation, supervision, mentoring and training of undergraduate and/or postgraduate students and less experienced members of the project team to ensure their effective development.
8. Perform administrative tasks related to the activities of the research group and School, including Budgets/Expenditure.
9. Supervise Masters students and act as co-supervisor to PhD students as assigned by the Director of Institute and/or senior group leader.
10. Perform administrative tasks related to the activities of the project and Institute, including budgets/expenditure.
11. Keep up to date with current knowledge and recent advances in the field/discipline in order to provide advice and guidance to students and less experienced colleagues.
12. Engage in personal, professional and career development, to enhance both specialist and transferable skills in accordance with desired career trajectory.
13. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School/Director of Research Institute.
14. Contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, World Changers Together.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Qualifications
Essential:
A1 Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework level 12 [PhD] or equivalent in a relevant subject area.
Knowledge and Skills
Essential:
C1 A comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of current issues and future directions within the wider subject area or subject specialism
C2 Specialist theoretical and practical knowledge in areas relevant to the field of research
C3 Knowledge of project-specific technical models, equipment or techniques
C4 An established track record of project management and senior leadership roles
Experience
Essential:
E1 Significant track record of innovation experience, including research & development experience in a commercial setting
E2 Proven track record in the design, prototyping, and commercialization of advanced photonics or imaging systems, including successful technology transfer
E3 Substantial, relevant commercialisation experience in a related field, including experience with translating technical innovation into commercial impact and interacting with stakeholders and customers
E4 Experience of delivering quality outputs in a timely and efficient manner
E5 Demonstrable leadership in multidisciplinary research and development and with a history of managing complex engineering projects across academia and industry
