Job Purpose

 

The University of Glasgow is committed to empowering students to identify and achieve their career goals and realise their full potential. As a member of the Student Professional Development team within Careers, Employability & Opportunity, you will develop and manage a new team of Peer Career Supporter (PCS) part-time student staff, leading on the development of this new function.

 

As Peer Career Support Team Leader, you will lead on the training and ongoing development of the student staff. This will include designing a full training programme including working with third parties where necessary. You will also manage the team on an ongoing basis, coordinating their activities, liaising with colleagues within and beyond the service as necessary, and monitoring and managing performance and objectives.

 

Main Duties & Responsibilities

 

1. Establish and manage a new team of Peer Career Support Assistant part-time student staff. You will lead on the design and delivery of a full training programme on student careers and employability support, including working with external providers, along with the recruitment, onboarding, and ongoing professional development of the student staff.

2. Line and Operational Management of the student staff including organising rotas, managing timesheets and planning and coordination of the team’s day to day activities. This will include being an escalation point for the team and resolving problems, motivating the team and ensuring they are providing a high quality service at all times.

3. Build highly effective relationships and liaise with colleagues across Careers, Employability & Opportunity and in School and College Professional Services teams to deliver a seamless approach to peer career and employability support. Use influencing and persuasion skills to champion the peer support model and negotiate delivery space across campus.

4. Engage with internal partners and stakeholders to identify, develop and implement opportunities for outreach activity across campus.

5. Lead on the evaluation and continuous quality improvement of the peer-to-peer service, making day-to-day adjustments as appropriate and making considered recommendations to senior management in relation to more significant issues.

6. Ensure accurate recording and data collection of peer-to-peer career support to monitor performance against targets, taking rectifying action if necessary.

7. Championing the Peer Career Support model across the University, proactively seeking opportunities to engage with more of the student population and feeding back students’ concerns and interests into wider Careers, Employability & Opportunity service planning and strategy.

8. As a member of the Student Professional Development team, contribute to the design, development, and delivery of central careers activity and ad-hoc 1:1 guidance and coaching as required.

9. Establishing professional networks in relation to peer-to-peer career support and engaging with wider professional networks as appropriate.

 

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills & Experience

 

Knowledge/Qualifications

 

Essential:

A1 Either: Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar role, or number of different roles. Or: Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9, (Ordinary Degree, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4), or equivalent (including professional careers guidance qualifications), and experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s).

A2 Thorough knowledge of student employability, as well as an awareness of broader higher education landscape and issue impacting students.

A3 Thorough understanding of career guidance theory and practice.

A4 Understanding of relevant policies and procedures relative to the role, and the quality outputs and standards required.

 

Desirable:

B1 Understanding of peer support models (career or other).

 

Skills

 

Essential:

C1 Strong interpersonal skills including negotiating, motivating, influencing and relationship building.

C2 Ability to manage, motivate and inspire others.

C3 Excellent communication, including presentation and report-writing skills.

C4 Ability to undertake mid to long term strategic planning spotting and acting upon opportunities to progress plans.

C5 Ability to demonstrate creativity and innovation in service design and delivery.

C6 Ability to analyse complex issues and think strategically.

 

Experience

 

Essential:

E1 Experience of managing others.

E2 Proven ability to work within complex range of teams, manage multiple projects and resources, including collaboration with internal colleagues within the University.

E3 Planning and progressing projects within professional guidelines applying initiative and independent judgement.

E4 Demonstrable experience of evaluating service delivery for continuous improvement.

 

Desirable:

F1 Professional career guidance experience, preferably gained in a higher education setting.

 

Terms and Conditions

 

Salary will be Grade 7, £41,064 - £46,049 per annum.

 

This post is full time (35 hours per week) and open ended (permanent).
