Job Purpose
Delivery of effective marketing and communications support service to the five schools within the College of Social Sciences. This will include the provision of advice on how to create content and where best to promote it, ensuring it is accessible to key target audiences, such as researchers, research users, funders and external collaborators.
It will involve the management of various communications channels (e.g. including social media, newsletters and web pages) and engagement with contributors to develop bespoke content for each. The role will involve management of an overarching communications calendar, including, but not limited to, research content, events and activities relating to social sciences, with the key objective of increasing overall external engagement.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. To play a leading role in the development of research content and the management of priority projects, actions and wider communications (including, but not limited to project case studies, accessible articles, events, images and videos) to promote the work of researchers in the schools to a range of audiences.
2. Working with the Dean of External Engagement and Director of Research, Engagement & Impact and reporting into the Engagement and Impact Manager, play a leading role in implementing an action plan for the collation and promotion of research content through the Social Sciences Hub, working in partnership with Schools and project-based teams to ensure efficient use and amplification of content.
3. Working with a range of stakeholders, lead the planning of strategic research marketing campaigns and activities that target key audiences including, but not limited to, policymakers, private and third sector organisations, potential collaborators and clients.
4. In consultation with key stakeholders, develop and maintain a social media action plan and engaging social media presence in relation to research and external engagement.
5. To effectively lead a community of practice on marketing and communications within the College, and ensure cross-College and cross-service sharing of content and networking.
6. To undertake other communications duties of equivalent standing including the standardisation of content and communications as directed by the Engagement and Impact Manager in support of the College and University’s strategic goals.
7. To contribute to the enhancement of the College of Social Sciences’ role in amplifying the University’s international profile, in line with the University’s Strategic Plans.
8. To effectively manage two Digital Media Administrators, a Videographer and a Web Developer to ensure an efficient and effective service offering to support the Schools and enable the delivery of effective communications.
9. To lead marketing and communications activities associated with priority research and innovation projects within the College of Social Sciences (e.g. Executive Education).
10. To work collaboratively with the College’s Internal Communications and Operations functions to ensure holistic coverage of both day-to-day and strategic communications.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential:
A1 Degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline/business area with evidence of continued professional development in an area relevant to the role.
A2 Knowledge of marketing techniques, approaches and strategies, including experience of paid advertising campaigns.
A3 Understanding of academic environments including the complex mix of pressures, constraints and motivations of academic staff, schools, research institutes, the college and the institution.
A4 Understanding of the structures and priorities of social science research users, partners, collaborators and funders.
Desirable:
B1 Membership of, and/or accreditation from, a relevant professional body (e.g. CIPR).
Skills
Essential:
C1 Highly-developed sales and marketing skills.
C2 Excellent written communication skills with the ability to interpret complex ideas and communicate them to a range of audiences.
C3 Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to engage with a wide range of researchers to tell compelling stories about them and their research.
C4 Ability to work as part of a distributed team, exercising judgement on which modes of partnership working are best suited to each team or school.
C5 Highly developed IT skills, particularly in relation to web design, web analytics and social media.
C6 Ability to exercise initiative.
Desirable:
D1 Ability to use video production equipment.
D2 Ability to use photo and/or video editing software.
Experience
Essential:
E1 Significant experience in a role with relevant external communications responsibilities.
E2 Experience of a marketing or communications role either in a private, public, third sector and/or HE setting.
E3 Experience of successfully developing research marketing content via a range of media.
E4 Experience of successfully developing and implementing marketing campaigns and action plans, targeted at a range of specific audiences.
E5 Experience of the management of organisational social media channels.
Desirable:
F1 Experience of supporting academic researchers.
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 7, £41,064 - £46,049 per annum.
This post is full time (35 hours per week) and open ended (permanent).
