Job Purpose
To provide functional leadership to the clinical pathology laboratory in the SoVM’s Veterinary Diagnostic Service (VDS), managing this major service with a significant degree of autonomy. To judiciously guide the integration of commercial work with academic research activities, strategically developing the service and augmenting its international reputation.
The role involves providing specialist technical and interpretive expertise within the clinical pathology discipline and is responsible for the planning and operation of special technical resources and ensuring proficient and efficient service delivery, support the laboratory staff within this multidisciplinary unit, to support school clinical and research staff and teaching of undergraduate and post graduate students.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Be jointly responsible along with the academic leader of the clinical pathology laboratory for all managerial aspects of the clinical pathology service including budget and staff management, as well as contributing to the strategy and business cases for this service
2.Lead and manage the technical service within veterinary clinical pathology including managing the technical team
3.To contribute to administrative work of the service as assigned by the clinical director or line manager such as conduct performance and development review and attend to core portal requests for the technical team
4.Be responsible for the management of and compliance with relevant Health and Safety and oversee the maintenance of up-to-date standard operating procedures. Maintain all necessary records in accordance with requirements, keep up to date with developments or legal changes relevant to the work of the unit
5.Act as management representative on a range of diagnostic service and School Committees and groups
6.In consultation with the duty pathologist, provide a rapid, efficient and interpretive clinical pathology service ensuring optimal service delivery. This involves day-to-day planning of the service and research project design that will maintain a clinical referral workload necessary to support diagnostic services, teaching, research and income generation
7.To operate, maintain and assure accurate output from automated analysers within the clinical pathology unit, ensuring all internal and external quality control standards comply to manufacturers and external agency directives
8.In consultation with the duty pathologist, provide interpretive analyses of data generated by the clinical pathology laboratory and provide expert technical advice. Maintain high volume databases and records, creating technical/progress reports.
9.Play a proactive role in the development of novel approaches and techniques to aid diagnosis and exploit the opportunities to enhance the income generation capability of the service
10.Lead the costing and procurement of consumables and equipment, ensuring that all laboratory equipment is maintained, including arranging servicing and repairs as required
11.Proactively maintain and develop the diagnostic laboratory information system
12.To deliver teaching and training and to impart knowledge, skill and guidance in a specialist area to undergraduate and post graduate students, scientists, nurses and technical staff through the delivery of tutorials and one-to-one teaching as required
13.Contribute to the development and planning of research projects with veterinary clinicians and scientists, take responsibility for day-to-day planning and design of projects with a clinical pathology component, keeping up-to-date records of all experiments and biological material generated and subsequent archiving and preservation of diagnostic and experimental data and techniques

Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential
A1. Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar role.
OR Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework Level 9 (Ordinary Degree, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4) or equivalent (including professional accreditation with relevant formal training) and experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s).
A2 Extensive theoretical and practical knowledge/skills in a wide range of diagnostic and research techniques within clinical pathology: manual and automated haematology techniques, immunohaematology including blood transfusion medicine and cytology
A3 Working knowledge of diagnostic biochemistry and endocrinology, sufficient to manage staff in these areas.
A4 Up-to-date knowledge of research in the field of veterinary clinical pathology.
A5 Knowledge of relevant health and safety issues as well as University policies and procedures.
Skills
Essential
C1 In possession of advanced/specialist skills in the discipline of veterinary haematology and fluid cytology and an ability to interpret diagnostic and experimental findings and develop novel test modalities.
C2 Capacity to think strategically, integrating commercial laboratory activities with research opportunities
C3 Ability to impart knowledge and expertise through training of a wide range of staff and students, external clinicians and international clinicians and scientists.
C4 Ability to use and maintain specialised equipment
C5 Excellent organisational, planning and problem-solving skills together with communication and supervisory abilities.
C5 Extensive IT skills including expert systems such as Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
Experience
Essential
E1 Significant diagnostic laboratory experience with experience in a managerial and functional leadership role.
E2 Experience of staff leadership, supervision and motivation
E3 Extensive practical experience in haematology, immunohaematology and fluid cytology.
E4 Extensive IT experience, focusing on scientific application software and expert systems.
Desirable
F1 Experience of establishing and fulfilling contracts with biotechnology companies.
F2 Experience of working independently and personally developing internal and external research collaborations.
F3 Experience of research-oriented technical work, evidenced by publications in international journals.
F4 Track record of creating IP in the form of novel diagnostic test methodology and/or the generating of materials for commercial exploitation.
F5 An international reputation in veterinary laboratory diagnostics.
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 7, £41,064 - £46,049 per annum.
