Job Purpose

The postholder will join the School of Infection and Immunity, working in the Sir Graeme Davies Building (SGDB).  Postholder will be responsible for updating and developing robust health and safety systems to ensure the safe and efficient operation of all SGDB facilities, in full compliance with applicable legislation, regulations, and institutional policies.

 

Main duties and responsibilities

1.Responsible for reviewing and updating health and safety processes across SGDB in collaboration with Technical and Building managers. Identify and interpret legislative developments, best practice, and guidance; update relevant staff on key changes and ensure appropriate actions are taken.

2.To provide specialist advice on completing risk assessment documentation, ensuring that academics are given appropriate guidance, so they are completed to a high standard, accurately conducted, recorded and reviewed on a regular basis.

3. Interpret safety legislation to create an appropriate internal auditing programme to ensure management oversight of safety in containment level 2 (CL2) laboratories.

4. Work in collaboration with Professional Services team to establish and maintain systems for recording and reviewing health and safety documentation, ensuring timely updates.

5. Analyse audit data to identify compliance gaps.  Implement a reporting mechanism to highlight any breaches identified and work, in collaboration with Building and Technical Managers, the Health and Safety committee chair and School academics to initiate corrective actions.

6. Be responsible of the day-to-day management of and compliance with all relevant health and safety within the SGDB, keeping up to date with developments or legal changes relevant to the ongoing research work.

7. Develop a comprehensive health and safety resource hub on SharePoint and ensure line managers are familiar with accessing this resource.  This will be a centralised School resource with a repository of templates, SOPs and training materials.

8. Proactive management of communications with School academics and other key stakeholders, assisting with paperwork completion, guidance and assisting with transitioning files to the Schools’ central resource point.

9. To review, develop and implement new and improved ways to current recycling processes.

10. Attend and contribute to health and safety meetings, network events, team meetings and School wide meetings as and when required.

11. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the line manager or Head of School.

 

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential

A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9 [Ordinary Degree, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4], or equivalent in a relevant discipline/business area with evidence of continued professional development in an area relevant to the role.

A2 Knowledge and understanding of COSHH legislation, guidelines and risk assessment.

A3 Willingness to undergo and/or refresh Health and Safety training as deemed necessary or relevant for the role.

A4. Excellent IT knowledge, including Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Outlook.

 

Desirable

B1 Degree in relevant discipline to the school

B2 IOSH Managing Safety certificate or equivalent Health and Safety qualification

B3 Knowledge and understanding of robust and effective risk management processes and their practical application within a laboratory environment.

 

Skills

Essential

C1 Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with proven ability to interact effectively with stakeholders at all levels, within both Professional Services and academic colleagues.

C2 Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to positively influence and engage stakeholders at all levels.

C3 Ability to use initiative and judgement and work independently, but also as part of a team.

C4 Ability to establish priorities and to multi-task to deadlines but also work flexibly to adapt to changes.

C5 Ability to interpret complex guidelines.

C6 Strong organisational skills

 

Desirable

D1 Ability to review and improve existing administrative processes.

D2 Familiarity with OneDrive, Teams and SharePoint

 

Experience

Essential

E1 Must be able to demonstrate relevant competencies as required for this level of specialist technical post.

E2 Extensive experience working in a research laboratory at Containment Level 2 or higher.

E3 Experience in undertaking and understanding risk assessments.

E4 Significant experience using spreadsheets, databases, or other analytical tools to systematically collect, manage and analyse large amounts of data.

E5 Experience of advising / training students and /or staff on technical matters.

E6 Experience of developing and/or delivering effective management processes.

 

Desirable

F1 Experience of working in higher education.

F2 Experience of writing and updating Standard Operating Procedures

F3 Experience of project management.

 

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 6, £33,951 - £37,694 per annum.

 

This post is full time and fixed term until 31 July 2026.
