Job description
Job Purpose
Carry out various porter/handyperson tasks safely in assigned area. Duties include securing the building, moving items, handling deliveries, and completing basic repairs and maintenance. The role ensures the property remains well-maintained and supports overall student satisfaction. Courteous customer service is required to ensure that students enjoy a positive experience.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Maintain upkeep of allocated work area. e.g. daily removal and disposal of refuse and recycling, keep stairwells and pathways clear by carrying out duties such as sweeping leaves and daily removal of rubbish from the grounds. Occasional cleaning of block staircases and windows in public rooms.
2. Carry out duties pertinent to security and safety of the residence, e.g. fire exit checks, fire equipment checks (visual), weekly testing of fire alarm system, termly health and safety checks in property, weekly water flushing programme in vacant rooms/external taps.
3. Complete all paperwork associated with works undertaken in an accurate and timely manner.
4. Take a proactive approach to site maintenance. Identify any potential faults/issues within the property and report them to office staff in a timely manner.
5. Carry out initial investigation into fault/issue and undertake basic repairs/remedial action as appropriate, within Health & Safety guidelines, and in a manner that ensures personal safety and that of others. If the fault/issue cannot be resolved in a safe manner, within skillset or requires further investigation, escalate fault/issue to relevant contractor and/or office staff.
6. Assist with basic enquiries from students, guests, colleagues and external agencies (e.g. fire brigade, contractors, Estates Directorate and Commercial Services) in a polite and courteous way, escalating issues that cannot be resolved to office staff.
7. Always ensure security of property keys in possession.
8. Occasional cover of property reception (answering queries, logging and issuing keys).
9. Any other duties as reasonably assigned by line manager.
Knowledge, qualifications, skills and experience
Knowledge/qualifications
Essential:
A1 Either: Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar role. Or: Minimum Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 3 in English and Mathematics (National 3) or equivalent
A2 Knowledge of Manual Handling
A3 Knowledge of health and safety policies relevant to the role
A4 Knowledge of outputs and standards required in a handyperson/porter role
Desirable:
B1 Have a basic working knowledge of domestic heating systems e.g. bleed radiators, find boiler error codes
Skills
Essential:
C1 Basic maintenance and repair skills (e.g. changing light bulbs, replacing sink plug, unblocking drains)
C2 Proactive, flexible and enthusiastic approach to work
C3 Self-motivated and able to manage own time effectively
C4 Ability to work effectively and within minimal supervision
C5 Ability to communicate with students, staff and visitors in a courteous and effective manner.
C6 Good written and oral communication skills
C7 Basic IT skills relevant to the role
C8 Ability to complete routine record keeping
C9 Ability to participate and complete training relevant to the role
Experience
Essential:
E1 Experience of working in a similar role e.g. handyperson
E2 Experience working in a customer facing environment
Desirable:
F1 Experience working in Student Accommodation or Higher Education

Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 2, £23,350 per annum.
This post is full time (35 hours per week) and open ended (permanent). Shifts are Monday to Friday 08.00 – 16.00.
