Job Purpose

The postholder is responsible for the provision of high-quality data across all elements of the three undergraduate (UG) curricula in School of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing (SoMDN) from admission of students through to graduation with a particular focus on assessment and differential attainment. The role will also support the wider SoMDN with data specific projects and a key element of the role is collating data in respect of Freedom of Information requests.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

 

1.       Work in collaboration with the three SoMDN UG Programme Leads to continue to develop and maintain a consistent statistical model supporting all aspects of assessment congruent with software programmes currently in use.

2.       Contribute to the ongoing design and development of the curriculum by:

*         Data modelling proposed changes to assessment procedures, working with the academic teams to advise on development and robust, safe delivery with a clear understanding of the impact on the overall assessment pattern and, therefore, on student progression.

*         Reviewing existing assessment practice data to inform evidence-based change.

*         Analysing differential attainment across the three UG curricula contributing to the admissions, support and curriculum development agendas

3.       Responsible for analysis of results for internal and external Exam Board meetings, including standard setting, attending the meetings to present results and adjust to reflect changes made by the Examiners.

4.       Preparation of reports for internal and external stakeholders (in particular the regulatory bodies), preparation of presentations and reporting for Quality Assurance purposes both internal and external.

5.       Undertaking complex data analysis required of the School by Freedom of Information requests.

6.       Represent the SoMDN and actively participate in internal and external committees and networks relevant to assessment. This will be particularly relevant to the UG Medical School where national assessments are undertaken by students.

7.       Ongoing development and maintenance of SoMDN databases.

8.       Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Line Manager.

 

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

 

Knowledge/Qualifications  

Essential:

A1   Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9, (Ordinary Degree, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4) in a data intensive discipline such as Mathematics, Computing Science or Statistics or equivalent (including professional accreditation with relevant formal training), and experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s).

 

Skills

Essential:

C1 Strong Data Analysis skills, including data preparation, pattern identification, data visualisation and storytelling.

C2 Highly sophisticated ability to use spreadsheets and statistical software efficiently and effectively

C3 Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate complex concepts to all levels of staff and students

C4 Ability to work successfully both independently and as part of a team

C5 Excellent collaborative and negotiating skills facilitating constructive communication with colleagues.

C6 Ability to translate data into visualisations and reports which provide clear and concise information.

C7 Ability to quickly grasp new concepts and understand how data analysis will support their development and roll out.

C8 A passion for data and spreadsheets and the positive contribution that can be made by the provision of statistical analysis and a robust flow of data.

 

Experience

Essential:

E1 Experience of provision of statistical analysis in a strategic planning environment.

E2 Experience of planning and progressing work activities within professional guidelines or organisational policy, appropriately applying initiative and independent judgement

E3 Track record of developing and delivering innovative solutions in collaborative projects

 

Desirable:

F1 Experience of provision of data analysis in an HE and/or health environment

 

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 7, £41,064 - £46,049 per annum.

This post is full time and fixed term. This post is to cover maternity leave for up to 12 months or until the substantive postholder returns.
