The University of Glasgow’s School of Biodiversity, One Health and Veterinary Medicine is seeking to recruit a dynamic and motivated Clinician to join our Small Animal Surgery team. We encourage candidates who have an interest in general surgery, with either strong orthopaedic or strong soft tissue bias.

 

The successful candidate will be based in our award-winning Small Animal Hospital on the beautiful Garscube estate. This busy multidisciplinary hospital is staffed by a team of specialists in surgery, internal medicine, neurology, oncology, diagnostic imaging, anaesthesia, and ophthalmology. State of the art facilities available on-site include 1.5T MRI, CT, linear accelerator, digital radiography, and four fully equipped surgical theatres. Our ‘One Hospital’ team ethos ensures exceptional clinical care can be delivered to our patients, and supports the continual professional development of our vets, nurses and support staff.

 

The ideal candidate will hold a Diploma or equivalent qualification in surgery and will have experience delivering a high-quality surgical referral service. The successful candidates will also contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate clinical training, and clinical research and scholarship is actively encouraged and supported through a significant element of ‘off-clinic’ time.

 

Candidates must have an RCVS registrable degree in veterinary medicine and hold a postgraduate Diploma in Veterinary Surgery (ECVS, ACVS or RCVS).  Experienced candidates holding Advanced Practitioner status will also be considered along with candidates eligible to sit the Diploma examination (prior contact is advised).  A background in research and a PhD, although desirable, is not essential.

Job Purpose

To deliver an efficient and effective surgery service by providing expertise and clinical activity in the Small Animal Hospital. To enhance and develop the delivery of clinical teaching to undergraduates, clinical scholars and to undertake clinical research/scholarship within the surgery service service thereby contributing to the School objectives relevant to national and international excellence in clinical service, teaching and research.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical:

1. To provide a high-quality surgery service and appropriate advice to external referring practices and owners that will consequently maintain a clinical referral workload necessary to support the commercial, teaching and research activities.

2. To support the development of novel approaches and techniques to aid diagnosis and treatment and exploit the opportunities to enhance the income generation capability of the service.

3. To contribute to the implementation and validation of clinical quality assurance measures.

4. To participate in the out-of-hours service, ensuring adequate cover is available for the provision of direct supervision, advice and expertise when required.

5. To support the planning, organisation and delivery of training requirements of the clinical scholars, by supervision of clinical duties and research projects, with a view to their successful completion of appropriate Board examinations.

5. To participate in practical/professional and/or clinical practice bodies related to surgery service at national and international level as appropriate.

6. To ensure compliance with the continuing professional development requirements of the speciality and the RCVS.

7. To participate in promotional activities and events relating to the Small Animal Hospital.

 

Teaching:

8. To engage in the delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities, as directed by the Head of Division in consultation with the course leaders.

9. To contribute to the development of creative and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, in accordance with the University’s Quality Enhancement Strategy, so that the educational opportunities available to students are maintained or improved.

10. To engage in the delivery of a range of assessment activities and engage fully in the examination process as appropriate, (using a variety of methods and techniques) and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support learning.

 

Clinical Research/Scholarship:

11. To collaborate in clinical investigations and evidence-based medicine of an external reputation and develop a consistent output of publications in high quality refereed clinical journals and/or textbooks.

12. To attend and participate in national/international events/research seminars/conferences within the service area.

 

Administration:

13. To develop material to promote the surgery service both at conferences and electronically.

14. To undertake divisional/school level administration as requested by the Head of School/Division. To contribute to the performance and development review processes as appropriate in accordance with university strategy.

 

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

 

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential:

For appointment at Grade 7:

A1 Veterinary degree registerable with RCVS.

A2 Completion of recognised residency training programme.

 

For appointment at Grade 8:

A3 Veterinary degree registerable with RCVS.

A4 ECVS Diploma or RCVS CertAVP in small animal surgery (orthopaedics or soft tissue).

 

Desirable: 

B1 PhD (or other evidence of research training).

B2 Hold a relevant teaching qualification.

 

Skills

Essential:

C1 High standard of communication skills both orally and written.

C2 Ability to work as part of a team.

C3 Expertise across the field, corresponding to training and qualifications, and ability to provide advice to clinicians, external veterinary surgeons, research bodies and organisations.

C4 Self-motivated, able to plan for contingencies and think strategically.

C5 Ability to work independently.

C6 Ability to provide specialist level veterinary care to patients in the small animal hospital.

 

Desirable:

D1 High standard of presentation skills.

D2 Understanding and experience of databases and other IT applications/packages.

 

Experience

Essential:

E1 Postgrad clinical experience in surgery service speciality.

E2 Evidence of clinical publications.

 

In addition, for appointment at Grade 8:

E3 Teaching experience relevant to the HE sector.

 

Desirable:

F1 Teaching or training experience at undergraduate level.

 

Note: Candidates having completed a recognised residency training programme and Board-eligible would be appointed at Grade 7 and will be promoted to Grade 8 immediately upon passing the Board exams. Candidates with suitable relevant experience will be considered for appointment at Grade 7.
