Job Purpose

 

To contribute to a strong and vibrant research culture in the College of Arts and Humanities. Working in the team in the College Research Office, to support Principal Investigators (PIs) with pre- and post-award research management including application preparation and costing where required. To support complex projects at post-award stage including project tracking, reporting and problem solving. To liaise with other teams within College Research Support, College of Arts and Humanities Professional Services and University Services to ensure effective communication and provision of a seamless research management support service.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

 

1.  Act as a lead on complex post-award questions, maintaining a portfolio of post-award projects and acting as the main point of contact for Principal Investigators.

2.  Working with Project Coordinators, provide post award support, including that for portfolio management (where appropriate), financial management and project change processes and control.

3.  In coordination with Project Coordinators, provide pre-award advice and support to Principal Investigators. This will include costing, submission processes and advising on funder guidelines.

4.  Responsible for planning and prioritising work towards submission of grant applications and associated contractual documents, to achieve short- and medium-term targets and deadlines.

5.  In cooperation with Project Coordinators, undertake risk and feasibility assessment of proposed funding applications to mitigate risk and optimise funding.

6.  Progress application outcomes and process awards from funders including contracts, sourcing feedback from funders where available and updating system accordingly.

7.  Maintain and ensure the integrity of all relevant project data on University systems.

8.  Support audits, ensuring adequate audit records are maintained and attend meetings with auditors, as required.

9.  Contribute to process improvement, working with colleagues in the Research Office, College and in other University functions.

 

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

 

Knowledge/Qualifications

 

Essential:

A1 Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a related role OR Degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline/business area with evidence of continued professional development in an area relevant to the role.

A2 An understanding of funding processes including application processes and interpreting guidelines across a broad range of different types of funder.

A3 Knowledge and understanding of data integrity and its importance.

 

Desirable:

B1 Knowledge and experience in a subject relevant to the College.

B2 Knowledge of the Higher Education research environment.

B3 Knowledge of the regulatory framework which governs research in a particular College area.

 

Skills

 

Essential:

C1 Excellent ability to solve problems independently and in cooperation with other stakeholders where required.

C2 Project management – both short-term deadline driven and longer term involving multiple conflicting deadlines and coordination across multiple organisational units.

C3 Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate at all levels.

C4 Excellent organisational and planning skills and the ability to work to tight deadlines.

C5 High degree of numeracy.

C6 Excellent eye for detail and accuracy.

C7 Highly developed IT skills, particularly excel related.

C8 Ability to exercise initiative and work independently but also as part of a team.

C9 Ability to work flexibly and adapt to changing environments.

C10 Ability to interpret complex guidelines and prepare reports and budgets in line with the requirements set out.

C11 Ability to assess risks and financial implications.

 

Experience

 

Essential:

E1 Experience of relevant financial administration in a similar or related role.

E2 Experience in delivering a customer-focused service.

E3 Experience of complex project administration.

E4 Experience of processing, analysing and presenting data.

E5 Experience of tracking budgets.

E6 Experience of working successfully with different organisational functions in a complex organisation.

 

Desirable:

F1 Experience of Higher Education environment and supporting the work of researchers.

F2 Experience of providing high quality advice and guidance on research management.

F3 Experience of successfully overseeing the work of staff.

 

Terms and Conditions

 

Salary will be Grade 6, £33,951 - £37,694 per annum.

 

This post is full time (35 hours per week) and open ended (permanent).
